Market House Studios interviews sign‑painting artist Lisa Wigham and Suzanne Pinder about the “Pride and Place” Sign Painting Exhibition, running until 29 March 2025 at Fleetwood Market Gallery
The artworks in this exhibition were created by local participants during workshops at Market House Studios with Lisa Wigham, an artist dedicated to preserving the endangered craft of traditional sign painting.
Together, the group explored the town in search of handmade signs — from cast‑iron lettering on grids, to masons’ marks carved into stone, mosaic tiles, and the faded ‘ghost’ signage still clinging to old shop fronts.
These ‘sign‑spotting’ journeys led participants through Fleetwood’s historic architecture and hidden back streets, meeting people along the way and gathering stories of ancient and modern myths, historic events, and the town’s unique character. These encounters inspired the artworks featured in the exhibition.
This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
