Primer on the Covenants #10

Listen Later

Pastor Rhode teaches on Romans 4 and 5 to understand the distinction between being justified by faith versus good works. This is being done in preparation to understand the Sinaitic Covenant. We learn that Abraham was not justified by his works but by his faith in God. This faith, rather than his actions, was counted as righteousness.
No one can boast about their righteousness before God because no one is inherently righteous. Abraham's faith, not his circumcision, was what justified him before God.
Paul argues that Abraham's righteousness came before his circumcision, making him the father of all who believe, both circumcised (Jews) and uncircumcised (Gentiles). This teaching underscores that true descendants of Abraham are those who share his faith, not just his genetic lineage. The law reveals human sinfulness and the need for a savior. It brings awareness of sin and God's wrath. Righteousness and justification only come through faith in Christ. This promise rests on God's grace, not on adherence to the law. All who have the faith of Abraham, both Jews and Gentiles, are considered his true offspring and part of the family of God.
