Mike Satterfield opened up his garage to talk about all kinds of car stuff, racing, Rally Historico, projects, street racing, and more.  Great guy with a whole lot going on.  We are looking forward to a post-race interview, as well as (possibly) some day of race audio.  Make sure to check out The Gentleman Racer and follow him on social media (the links are on the site).  For more about the Rally Historico Race, click here.

The Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California was every bit alive on this particular March weekend. Inside the super speedway oval track was NASCAR driving school, at the south end of the parking lot was dedicated go karting, above that was the Hotchkis autocross challenge and next to that was the quarter mile dragway. The National Muscle Car Associaton (NMCA) kicked off the 2015 season with their Spring Nationals.
We missed both runs by ProMedia president, Steve Wolcott, but we managed to get some great coverage of the many race classes as they ran the quarter with mid 80’s temperatures on the track. Probably the most notable class is the ARP Outlaw 8.5.
Meaning, an 8-1/2” rear tire. Time lapse speeds varied from 111 to 146 mph in the 5-6 second neighborhood in a basically stock-looking car with power adders. This class only has less than 10 entrants, but I call that just plain crazy.
Other classes included Pro Mod, Super Quick, Quick Street and Brackets 1-3. Overall, you get a great variety including some dragsters and fiberglass bodied mods making the rounds. Big mention is also the True Street class which opens the doors to your every day driver truck, sedan or resto mod muscle car. Early and late models eligible as long as the driver has a DOT qualified helmet. The different rule for this class is the 30 mile stop and go traffic outside the track. Then the cars make their last dialed in run with the winner being the most consistent ET.

On the other side of the 18 foot wall, was the autocross sponsored by Hotchkis Suspension. We’re always amazed at the growing trend of the autocross challenges. It’s affordable, easy and looks like a lot of fun. It’s not an annual membership dedicated program like SCCA, but more like a single day, pay-as-you play kinda deal. It’s a dedicated area with the course changing each day and it’s timed. The program breaks drivers out by experience to keep the field consistent and to help with course setup between the runs.

We’ll see if we can get the Mustang ready for one of these events later this year since it’s pretty easy to sign up online and we’ll be attending the event anyway for some great motorsport coverage. This is all good motivation to get back to the garage.

We’ll be back for more NMCA in Fontana.

Family Events organized the 2nd annual show at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA. This event is billed as “America’s Car Show”, featuring a celebration of horsepower and torque with some of the nation’s top Muscle Cars, Street Machines, Pro Touring, Pro Street, Wild Street Trucks and today’s top builders and part manufacturer’s.
“There are several car shows on the West Coast, but this event at the Fairplex fills the void for classic and modern muscle cars and street machines, which are growing quickly in popularity,” said Fairplex VP of Busniess and Development, Dale Coleman. “ The Street Machine and Muscle Car Nationals offers the best showcase of these dream machines from the Baby Boomer generation to today that are embraced by all fans of all ages.”
We’d have to agree that it was definitely a Baby Boomer kinda show. Tons of Camaros, Chevelles and Mopars. The big plus for this kind of event is the motion within the show.
Outdoor registered cars can show, cruise and participate in the burnout contest, chassis dyno or autocross course which was sponsored by Hotchkis Performance. There is so much more than just a static show. You can see, smell and hear all things automotive. Open headers are allowed and there is a significant cruise course with the Fairplex.
The indoor Pro-Builders Pavilion featured top builders like Chip Foose and Duane Mayer from “American Hot Rods” TV show. Also inside were vendors like So Cal Speed Shop. Alex Xydias and Pete Chapouris were attending to sign autographs and promote the Alex Xydias Center for Automotive Arts (AXC). This program is designed for high school kids who are interested in the automotive field. The AXC is part of the Career and Technical Education Center at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high school students as well as community members with vocational training.
John Hotchkis was also present out in the autocross course which had approximately 30 cars running throughout the day. Some of the best times were 31-33 seconds with some mildly modified early and late model cars. That’s what makes it interesting, you never know what will show up and its open to everyone registered at the event. This is a great opportunity to test your reaction time and your driving habits. We’ll have to enter one of our cars next year and make a full day of it.
We’ll go back next year with GoPro and cameras.

Here is William's truck with two C4 transmissions, a flathead block, and a pair of 302 heads in the bed.  Sad rear end.  It did not like the bumps and dips of our fine Long Beach roads.

Here is the truck with the LP-25 installed and the same load in the back.  What a difference.  No sagging back end and no problem going over bumps and dips in the road.

Here's a profile shot of before and after spring kit installation. Note the difference in rear bumper heights. Truck load is the same.

The Nickel and Dime 302 engine. Davis calls it the "No Pressure 302". This poor '68 302 got some shade tree work done with a oil pump removal and no torque wrench. Yep, she was run with low oil pressure. She's 030 over and will hopefully make a new comeback at 040 over and new pistons, rings, bearings and a new hydraulic roller cam. Stay tuned for more. Much more to be done with the rest of the Mustang. New speedo, trans linkage swap and finish up the fuel line.

    Turlock, California 2015
Move over Grand National Roadster Show, we decided to go back to the Turlock swap meet this year for a change of scenery. This is one of the largest automotive swap meets held at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock, California. We’d have to say this is probably one of the best, and biggest, swap meets for vintage 1920’s through 1960’s American car parts on the West Coast. This event is open to the traditional hot rod aftermarket parts vendors as well; but there are no pin-up girl contests, live bands or vintage re-pop sunglasses. It’s hard, original American parts.
Vintage everything. Bikes, cars, motorcycles, scooters, tools, tractor parts, appliances, wood tools, power tools, signs and everything in between. There is plenty of junk in-between the gems so grab some Kettle Corn and take your time. The only thing we really didn’t plan on was the 48° foggy and overcast weather throughout the day. You’ll have no problem working off some unwanted calories by walking for 6 hours each day at the two-day event. We’ll even bet that the deals can be made as Sunday comes to an end. Bring a trailer, wagon, or handcart and plan your 2016 trip now: http://www.turlockswapmeet.com/
