In episode 8 of the Princeton Podcast, Mayor Mark Freda invited Lance Liverman, a lifelong Princeton resident who has served on many of Princeton’s boards and committees for the past 25 years.

Mark and Lance focused much of their conversation on the evolution of Princeton real estate, including our efforts to provide for affordable housing, as well as the potential community impact, both good and bad, of Accessory Dwelling Units often called ADUs, now beginning to appear here in Princeton.

In Episode 7 of the Princeton Podcast, Mayor Mark Freda invited Michael Yeh, Director of Emergency Services for the Princeton Fire Department, and Shawn Gallagher, Chief of the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad. Among the variety of topics discussed in this episode, Mike and Shawn detailed the differences between the services provided by each organization, as well as the collaboration often required in times of need. Since the Princeton Fire Department and the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad recruit many of their volunteer service members from our community, Mike and Shawn also discussed their organizations’ member training, personal and professional development, and upcoming recruitment open houses here in Princeton.

In episode 6 of the Princeton Podcast, Mayor Mark Freda invited Jim Waltman, Executive Director of The Watershed Institute to discuss among many topics, the impact of stormwater runoff in the greater Princeton area. They also discussed Jim’s background from his youth here in Princeton, to his early career experiences as a researcher in the Galapagos Islands and later in Venezuela, to his political experiences representing the National Audubon Society in Washington DC. Jim described his current role as the executive director of The Watershed Institute, its mission and research activities, its 1000 acre Watershed Reserve and the education exhibits and conferences hosted at Watershed Center.

Welcome to Episode 3 of the Princeton Podcast with Mayor Mark Freda. In this episode, Mark sat down with Bernie Hvozdovic, Princeton’s Municipal Administrator. They discussed Bernie’s background, his duties as municipal administrator, and the hot topic of town taxes. So without any further introduction, let’s join our host, Mark Freda and his guest, Bernie Hvozdovic, for episode 3 of The Princeton Podcast.

The Municipal Administrator serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Administrative Official for the municipality of Princeton and is responsible for management of all of municipal business and carrying out the policies of the Mayor and Council, the Administration, overseeing Princeton’s 250(+) employees in a municipality with a population of almost 32,000 residents, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Contract negotiations
• Implementing and enforcing administrative procedures
• Implementing the policies of Mayor and Council
• Personnel and personnel policies
• Preparation of the annual municipal budget and capital budget
• Public relations
• Supervising and coordinating the work of all municipal departments

Experience:

Bernie served as the Township Manager for South Brunswick Township for 10 years. Prior to being appointed, he practiced as an attorney, often advocating on behalf of municipalities and municipal workers. 

Administrator Hvozdovic received his Bachelors in Economics from Wake Forest University and went on to Delaware Law School for his JD. Following Law School, Hvozdovic completed a prestigious Clerkship with the Presiding Judge of the Chancery Division-General Equity of the New Jersey Superior Court, New Brunswick. He next worked for a private law firm where he became a Partner, before establishing his own firm. Hvozdovic is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Civil Trial Attorney. He has tried numerous cases to verdict and has argued before the New Jersey Supreme Court. He is admitted to practice in the State of New Jersey, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, US District Court for the District of New Jersey, and the Supreme Court of the United States of America. 

After being awarded a Certificate of Completion for the Senior Executives in the State and Local Government Program of John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, he also received a Master’s in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School. He continues to provide pro-bono legal services to children/young adults with special needs and adults with Dementia/Alzheimer’s.

• Certified by the Supreme Court of NJ as a Civil Trial Attorney
• Senior Executives In State and Local Government Program
