Pro Wrestling Forever Podcast

What exactly is a transitional champion?

It’s one of pro wrestling’s most commonly used terms—and one of its most commonly misused.

This week on Pro Wrestling Forever, Professor Degree and Blade Daily dig into the history of transitional champions: wrestlers who won a championship because their real job was to get that belt from one person to another.

And no, “he had a short title reign” doesn’t automatically count.

From Stan Stasiak and Ivan Koloff to Sgt. Slaughter, Raven and plenty more, the fellas examine some of wrestling history’s most famous temporary kings. Why were they chosen? Who were they replacing? Who was waiting on the other side? And which supposed transitional champions don’t actually fit the definition at all?

Along the way, we travel through WWE/WWF, WCW, ECW and decades of wrestling history to figure out how promoters have used transitional champions—and why some seemingly forgettable title reigns were actually crucial pieces of much bigger stories.

🏆 What really defines a transitional champion?

📼 Who are the best examples in wrestling history?

⏳ Does the length of a title reign even matter?

🤔 And have wrestling fans used the term so loosely that it’s starting to lose all meaning?

Professor Degree and Blade Daily have the championship lineage, historical context, strong opinions, and an entirely reasonable amount of concern about Stan Stasiak’s nine-day WWWF Championship reign.

It’s Pro Wrestling Forever: celebrating wrestling history, one wonderfully weird detour at a time.

Few moments in wrestling history changed the industry like WCW Bash at the Beach 1996.

Professor Degree, Blade Daily, and special guest Books and Bodyslams revisit the legendary pay-per-view that gave us Hollywood Hogan, the birth of the New World Order (nWo), and one of the greatest heel turns professional wrestling has ever seen.

Three decades later, does Hulk Hogan's shocking betrayal still hold up? Why did the Third Man storyline capture the imagination of wrestling fans around the world? And how did one leg drop reshape the Monday Night Wars, WCW, and modern professional wrestling?

The crew breaks down the entire event, revisits the iconic main event featuring Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Randy Savage, Lex Luger, and Sting, and celebrates the strange, wonderful, occasionally ridiculous magic that made mid-'90s WCW unforgettable.

If you love wrestling history, classic WCW, the nWo, Hulk Hogan, the Monday Night Wars, and deep dives into the biggest moments in professional wrestling, this episode is for you.

What if Sting had been revealed as the Third Man instead of Hulk Hogan at Bash at the Beach 1996?

In this episode of Pro Wrestling Forever, Professor Degree and Blade Daily return to Into the Wrestleverse to tackle one of the greatest "what if?" scenarios in professional wrestling history. Could Sting have led the New World Order? Would the nWo have become an even bigger cultural phenomenon, or would it have fizzled out before changing the industry? And how would Hogan, WCW, and the Monday Night Wars have been rewritten?

The hosts explore what likely would have happened, debate what should have happened, and follow the ripple effects across WCW, the WWF, and wrestling history as a whole.

If you love classic wrestling, WCW, the Monday Night Wars, Sting, the nWo, fantasy booking, and wrestling history, this episode is for you.

• Sting as the Third Man
• The creation of the nWo

Twenty-five years after its release, Ready to Rumble remains one of the most divisive movies in professional wrestling history. Was it an unfairly maligned comedy that genuinely celebrated wrestling fandom, or did it become an unfortunate symbol of WCW's final days?

Professor Degree and Blade Daily revisit the 2000 cult classic starring David Arquette, Scott Caan, and Oliver Platt, discussing Jimmy King's unforgettable journey, the parade of WCW superstar cameos, the outrageous Triple Cage finale, and whether the film still holds up today. The crew also explores the movie's lasting legacy, including its connection to David Arquette's controversial WCW World Heavyweight Championship reign and the persistent myth that Ready to Rumble "killed" WCW.

Whether you remember seeing it in theaters, discovered it years later, or have never experienced this wonderfully chaotic wrestling comedy, join us as we celebrate one of wrestling's most fascinating—and surprisingly lovable—cult classics.

But nearly four decades later, does the show still hold up? Which matches feel timeless? Which moments are unmistakably products of the late-1980s wrestling boom?

Adding a unique perspective, Books and Bodyslams watches SummerSlam 1988 for the very first time, giving a modern fan's reaction to a card many longtime fans consider a classic. Join us as we revisit WWF history, explore the legacy of the Mega Powers era, and discuss what still works—and what doesn't—when viewed through today's lens.

Welcome to the debut episode of Into the Wrestleverse, a new Pro Wrestling Forever series where Professor Degree and Blade Daily explore the biggest alternate-history scenarios in professional wrestling.

This episode tackles one of the most fascinating "what if?" questions ever discussed by wrestling fans: What if Ric Flair had left Jim Crockett Promotions and debuted in WWF at SummerSlam 1988? With Ted Turner's purchase of JCP looming later that year, a move by Flair could have dramatically altered the future of the wrestling business. Would WCW ever have been created? What happens to Sting, Lex Luger, Dusty Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, and the Four Horsemen? Could Hulk Hogan's WWF have become even more dominant, or would Flair have changed the company's direction entirely?

Join us as we trace the ripple effects across wrestling history, classic wrestling, the NWA, WWF, WCW, WrestleMania, the Monday Night Wars, and beyond. If you love wrestling nostalgia, fantasy booking, deep analysis, wrestling trivia, and exploring how one decision can reshape an entire industry, this is an episode you won't want to miss.

Topics discussed:

• Ric Flair's rumored 1988 WWF jump
• Jim Crockett Promotions and Ted Turner's purchase
• The future of WCW without Flair
• Sting, Lex Luger, Dusty Rhodes, and the Four Horsemen
• Hulk Hogan's WWF in an alternate timeline
• WrestleMania and the changing landscape of wrestling
• Long-term effects on the Monday Night Wars
• Fantasy booking wrestling's biggest alternate universe

Pro Wrestling Forever celebrates wrestling history, classic wrestling, vintage wrestling nostalgia, legendary promotions, wrestling fandom, analysis, debate, collectibles, trivia, and the stories that shaped professional wrestling across every era.
