  • First Phosphate secures facility lease for 10,000 tonne iron phosphate precursor plant in Quebec
First Phosphate's CEO, John Passalacqua, shared exciting news with Proactive's Steve Darling, announcing that the company has successfully secured a lease for a state-of-the-art 10,000 tonne per annum iron phosphate precursor plant in Saguenay, Quebec.
This facility will play a critical role in the production of cathode active material, a key component for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, as demand for efficient and sustainable energy storage solutions continues to rise.
Passalacqua revealed that a significant portion of the 305,000-square-foot facility will be retrofitted to support the production needs of the First Saguenay project, with its strategic location offering essential infrastructure such as natural gas, high-voltage electricity, process water, wastewater treatment, and a direct rail link across North America.
The facility’s proximity to the deep-sea port of Saguenay, just 20 km away, further enhances its strategic advantage, facilitating international trade and expanding future operations on adjacent industrial land.

  • Frontier IP: The Vaccine Group CEO discusses £1mln in funding support from Defra
Frontier IP Group PLC (AIM:FIPP) portfolio company The Vaccine Group (TVG) has been awarded more than £1 million in funding by the UK Government to develop a vaccine for Streptococcus suis.
TVG CEO Jeremy Salt spoke to Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's work on a vaccine for the global bacterial disease affecting pig populations. He explained the challenges posed by the strain variations of this bacteria, the reliance on antibiotics, and the current inefficiencies of available vaccines.
Highlighting the need for new approaches, Salt mentioned a collaboration to develop a challenge model for the UK’s prevalent strain, funded by Innovate UK. “We’re developing a vaccine that we hope will have a global application, but one of the key aspects for us is to show that it works against the prevalent strain in the UK,” Salt said.
He also discussed other key projects, such as vaccines for African swine fever and bovine respiratory diseases, which are of critical concern for global livestock farming.

  • Ilika's Goliath batteries exceed safety test expectations; CEO discusses implications
Ilika Plc CEO Graeme Purdy takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through the recent successful safety test results of the company's Goliath solid-state battery prototypes.
Purdy highlighted that the independent tests, conducted under the SafeBatt program, exceeded expectations, demonstrating the robust performance of Ilika's batteries under extreme conditions. The tests revealed no thermal runaway in Ilika's Goliath prototypes, contrasting with explosions seen in standard lithium-ion cells, making this a significant milestone for battery safety in electric vehicles (EVs).
Purdy explained that the implications of these results are far-reaching, particularly for EV design. By reducing the need for heavy battery pack reinforcements, vehicle weight can be lowered, extending the driving range—a key benefit of Ilika’s solid-state technology. The company is now focused on further developing larger batteries and sharing additional data with partners in the coming months.
"Solid-state batteries like the ones we're developing are expected to enable a much greater range for passenger vehicles," said Purdy.

  • European Green Transition's Olserum drill program completed ahead of schedule
European Green Transition PLC CEO Aiden Lavelle discusses the company’s recently completed drill program at the Olserum Rare Earth Project with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion.
Lavelle shared that the program, consisting of 1,500 meters of drilling across 13 holes, finished ahead of schedule and under budget. Ten holes were drilled at the Djupedal prospect, while the remaining three targeted the Olserum West prospect.
Lavelle highlighted that the company is optimistic about the visual results from the drill core, noting that geology consistent with surface observations was encountered. The next steps involve sending the samples for analysis at ALS Laboratory, with results expected later in the second half of 2024.
When asked about the significance of these results for securing a partner, Lavelle emphasised the importance of demonstrating the district-scale potential of the project and expanding the known mineralisation system at Olserum.

  • Zephyr Energy CEO on successful State 36-2R well production test result
Zephyr Energy PLC (AIM:ZPHR, OTCQB:ZPHRF) CEO Colin Harrington joined Steve Darling from Proactive to provide an operational update on the State 36-2R LNW-CC well at the company’s flagship project in the Paradox Basin, Utah. The company has successfully completed the second phase of the production test, with the acidization operation effectively removing near-wellbore formation damage. This resulted in significantly enhanced reservoir deliverability and improved permeability near the wellbore after each acid treatment.
Harrington reported that peak production rates during the second test exceeded 2,100 barrels of oil equivalent per day—a remarkable achievement for an onshore U.S. well with just 130 feet of completed reservoir interval. The test also observed higher variable liquid-yields compared to the company’s State 16-2 LN-CC well, with almost no evidence of water production. This could substantially reduce the need for costly water disposal, enhancing the well's economic viability.
This milestone marks a significant development in the White Sands Unit and the broader Paradox acreage.

  • Immunic says first patient enrolled in investigator-sponsored post-COVID syndrome trial
Immunic Inc chief medical officer Dr Andreas Muehler speaks to Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the start of an investigator-sponsored Phase 2 clinical trial focused on treating Post COVID Syndrome (PCS) with its lead compound, vidofludimus calcium. This drug is currently in Phase 3 trials for multiple sclerosis and has shown potential as a broad-spectrum antiviral.
Muehler explained that the trial, initiated by a group of German investigators, aims to investigate the role of viral reactivation in fatigue symptoms associated with PCS. The study builds on Immunic’s earlier work during the COVID-19 pandemic, which hinted at the drug's ability to reduce fatigue in hospitalized patients. Muehler highlighted the potential connection between Epstein-Barr virus reactivation and fatigue, a key area of interest that may also have implications for multiple sclerosis treatment.
“We are hopeful that this trial will provide supportive data linking virus reactivation and fatigue,” said Muehler.
Watch the video to learn more about the study, and why this trial could have a broader impact on Immunic’s ongoing research in multiple sclerosis.

  • Technology Minerals secures £50K grant towards pioneering lithium battery recycling
Technology Minerals Plc scientific director Anwar Sattar takes Proactive's Stephen Gunion through the company's recent advancements in battery recycling, including a £50,000 grant awarded to recycling business Rrecyclus by the Clean Futures Accelerator Program. This funding, matched by the company, will enable Recyclus to develop an innovative process to recycle lithium thionyl chloride batteries, which are currently unrecycled in Europe.
Sattar explained that these batteries, used in various industrial applications such as gas meters and fire alarms, contain toxic chemicals that need to be properly treated. The new recycling process will neutralise these chemicals and extract valuable lithium for reuse. Sattar also highlighted the company’s achievements at its Wolverhampton plant, where it set a new record by processing 7.2 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries in a single day. The company aims to scale up and handle larger batteries, further boosting its recycling capabilities.
This development showcases Technology Minerals' ongoing commitment to sustainable solutions in the battery recycling industry.
