Sermon for the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, By Reverend Shelley McVea
The reign of Saul comes to an end when God appoints the prophet Samuel to find and anoint a new king. Jesse brings his sons before Samuel and the prophet is impressed with the look of all of them. But God gives Samuel a different criteria, for the Lord does not see men as mortals see men: we look on the outward appearance of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart. God chooses Jesse’s last son, a shepherd, who is the lowliest and youngest of Jesse's sons. His name is David and he will become the ancestor of the most humble and yet the greatest King of all.

In the past of the Old Testament, God had ruled the country using judges and prophets to guide the people. However, now the people want to be like everyone else and they want to have a king. This upsets the prophet Samuel, and he warns the people that sometimes it is best not to get what you want.

Sermon for the Second Sunday after Pentecost, By Reverend Shelley McVea
Today Rev. Shelley offers insights into the story of Samuel, the child who is called, literally, by the Lord. God calls Samuel at night, but because he did not yet know God’s voice, he thinks it is Eli calling him. After three times, Eli figures out that this is God calling to Samuel, and he provides Samuel with the response to say: “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Today Rev. Shelley shares insights into one of the best known verses in the Bible. Nicodemus visits Jesus at night and they talk. Jesus gives Nicodemus a radical vision of what an encounter with God will be like: a new birth that will change everything. Anything less would not allow us to see God’s kingdom. The coming of Jesus created a new world of possibility: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

We continue in the season of Easter, today celebrating both Good Shepherd Sunday and Earth Day. Rev. Shelley looks at Psalm 23; probably the most famous Psalm in Scripture. When the Lord is our Shepherd we are promised that God will always lead us to our soul's refreshment - even as we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. And if we need reinforcements to keep us going, God sends goodness and mercy to follow in our wake.
