You could watch a thousand more tutorials and your mixes still wouldn't sound pro. Here's why, and what actually fixes it.

So you've probably watched hundreds of these videos by now. Way too much YouTube, way too many plugins bought. And your tracks still don't sound how you want them to.

The thing is, a lot of those tips are fine on their own. But one person's tip was never built to work with someone else's. They don't even know the other one exists. Different genre, different kind of track, different way of working. So you stack them up in one project and they cancel each other out, or make things worse. That's not a system, that's a mess.

In this one I get into why piecing it together yourself almost never works, the one rule I'll actually stand behind, the objections I hear the most ("I don't have time," "I'm not good enough yet") and the three pieces you need working together to get a pro sound. I also talk about learning the slow way, starting around 1999, and why it really didn't need to take me 25 years.

Most producers struggle because they compare their work to commercial songs without adjusting for volume. When you play tracks side-by-side, the louder version almost always sounds better to your brain, regardless of actual quality. Compression Isn't a Dark Art: Ask This One Question Before Touching Any Knob

This episode explains why compression stays confusing for many producers: it's usually taught as threshold, ratio, attack, and release without teaching the actual goal. The script reframes compression as four different "jobs" done with the same plugin, peak control, evening out a performance, glue for group cohesion, and character for audible pumping/aggression, and argues that settings only make sense once you know which job you're doing. It gives starting-point guidance for each job (e.g., fast attack/high ratio for peaks; slower attack/gentler ratio for leveling; low ratio/slow attack for glue) and suggests bypass-checking to confirm you haven't drifted into the wrong job.
