Prof Grant Schofield: The Impact of Glutamate Excitatoxicity on Mental Health

Listen Later

Hi everyone! Welcome to Episode #11 of The Enlightened Pharmacist.

Why your intake of glutamate can impact your mood?

Today's topic is very close to my heart: mental illness and glutamate excitatoxicity. I lost a dear friend and colleague to suicide. The consequences of this leaves a tsunami of disbelief, guilt to those left behind.

I was very excited when I heard about the work of Professor Grant Schofield highlighting chemical imbalances in the brain and impact on mental health.

Grant is a Professor of Public Health at Auckland University of Technology and director of the university's Human Potential Centre (HPC). He started in psychology, went into sport and exercise psychology, then into public health, especially physical activity, then obesity.

We met at the HCANZA. (Health Coaches Australia & NZ Association) in the Gold Coast where he spoke of glutamate and lifestyle.

In this episode, you will discover:

  • The role of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate on physical and mental stress
  • Impact of too much glutamate on mental illness, how to support yourself and reduce inflammation.
  • Philosophy of health coaching: being curious without judgement to help the client
  • Individualise diet, lifestyle and nutrition. Find out what works for you as there is no one size fits all approach
  • What Prof Schofield does to reduce inflammation and optimise health (Spoiler alert: it involves physical activity, community and anti-inflammatory hacks)
