Professor John Read discusses the "label and drug approach" , the medical model, and explores labels such as depression and schizophrenia, and other issues with the current construction and operation of this approach. He then outlines an alternate approach - understanding the nature of the human distress, what is happening for the client, and asking "what do you need from us" (the medical practitioners). He advocates and evidence based mental health system in which medications and interventions such as ECT are used as a last resort.
