Programa O Lado B do Lado B - # 12 Special Episode World Rock Day

Listen Later

The 13th of July is recognized in Brazil as the World Rock Day. The date annually celebrates rock music and was chosen in honor of Live Aid, a mega-event that took place on that day in 1985. The celebration is a reference to a wish expressed by Phil Collins, participant of the event, who would like it to be considered the "world day of rock". Despite being called "World Rock Day", the date is only celebrated in Brazil. It began to be celebrated in the mid-1990s, when two São Paulo radio stations dedicated to rock - 89 FM and 97 FM - began to mention the date in their programming. However, this date is completely ignored throughout the rest of the world. As it is an arbitrarily defined date and has no support in other countries, music specialists contest this choice. They suggest other dates that would be more significant to rock history and would therefore deserve to be the real Rock Day. Among them are July 5th, when, in 1954, Elvis Presley, alongside Scotty Moore (guitar) and Bill Black (bass), recorded a version of Arthur Crudup's That's All Right and February 9th, when, in 1964, the band The Beatles performed for the first time in the USA.
