Project Freelance

Demo reels are the most important asset you have when it comes to getting hired as a freelancer. Why? Well, a demo reel is basically just a collection of your best work and your favorite work. I include "favorite work," because, while it's dope that you've done a bunch of corporate work and weddings, but what have you done that looks badass AND is your own creative work? Why not show it off a little?

So, demo reels are not only for filmmakers. Photographers, architects, dancers, athletes, and actors all use demo reels when applying for new gigs. If you watch any sporting event on TV you will see what's known as a "highlight" reel, which shows the best plays that were made in the game, as well as highlight reels of the best players and their achievements. While these aren't "demo reels" specifically, they do the same thing; they highlight the best footage of the best parts of the game. The person who EDITS all of those highlight reels, which I've done a few myself, can then use those videos IN their demo reel, to show that they are capable of editing short form digital content, and THAT is what gets you hired by ESPN.

For musicians, this is essentially what your EPK, or Electronic Press Kit, is. It's a collection of your best work that is used to pitch your band to potential management, labels, sponsors, etc.

If you need someone to make your highlight reel/demo reel you can definitely reach out to either myself, or you can look on Upwork.com for some incredible freelancers. If you'd like to check out Upwork, shoot me an email at [email protected]

I filmed a documentary about Ryan on the 2017 run of Vans Warped Tour. We wanted to redo the main interview for the doco, but it ended up slowing the doco down and took the audience away from the immersive side of tour. So, instead of trashing this interview, I figured, why not still share it with the people out there that want to get into TMing, Production, or if you just want to hear some cool stories. Who will create the next "Warped Tour?" Is it you? Maybe a friend you have? Share this episode with them! It's full of strategies and tips on how Kevin brought "the scene" out of the underground and into the streets, literally...the venues were parking lots, plots of land, stadiums, and I believe they closed down part of the Vegas strip for the final Warped Tour.

I have wanted to pick Kevin Lyman's brain since I 2014 and I knew that NOW was the time to do it. Warped Tour has closed it's gates after 24 years of crazy angst-filled summers, and the man behind the whole thing has given his everything to keep it going, and, upon recording this podcast, almost his life. I was met with a post-op Kevin, who, because "the show must go on," let an infection in his knee, that he had replaced, bring him into SCEPTIC SHOCK!!

That's some crazy dedication!

In this episode of Project Freelance I talk with Kevin about his youth, how he built his legacy, and we talk about how the scene has changed and what the introduction and growth of social media has affected live music.

Kevin, thank you, as a fan, a photographer, a musician, and as an outcast, you gave me a place to call home. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!

Learn everything an artist or copyright owner should know about digital royalties, learn how to make money in music, and hear the secrets to songwriting success from this week's episode of Project Freelance, with my special guest Nicholas Mishko, creator of 10and8Management.

This week's topic is money; specifically, where is the money in music? Is there a way to actually make a living at making music? Yes. Yes, there is. This episode is the perfect introduction to the business side of the industry and I feel that it contains vital information for success as a musician.

With knowledge gained from working for years in the industry before creating 10 and 8 management, Mishko shares some of the secret tips he's learned.

Where do you get your royalties from? How do you get paid for streams? What are ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC? Did you know that you have royalties just waiting for you to learn about them? Well, Mishko answers all of these questions.

We talk about brand partnerships and how to approach brands and build relationships with them, the way Mishko has done with companies like Spirit Airlines, Vans, various wineries, and even a candy company or two.

In July 2018 I made a post on Instagram saying that I wanted to teach one-on-one classes with my listeners and readers, and I asked if anyone would be interested. Book a class with me: Justtheletterk.com/booking

On this week's episode of Project Freelance, I have a young photographer joining me. Her name is Nicole, and her user tag is @Kaoruphotography2019, and she reached out to me over Instagram about a photography project she had for a class in school. And since I have a lot of high schoolers that reach out to me about needing advice for their project, I figured that I might as well start with Nicole. I knew that I had to jump on board with this immediately, because I wish I had somebody there for me when I was stuck and had questions.

In this episode we discussed Nicole’s project, what her goals are for that project, and how she can take her ideas and turn them into visual works of art.

In order for me to help her I had her send me a set of photos she had taken so I could critique them, and I was absolutely tickled pink when I saw how talented this young photographer is.

Click this link to see those photos: www.justtheletterk.com/single-post/advice-for-photography-students

If you have a school project that you need help with, or would just like to pick another creator's brain, I highly recommend you reach out to me so we can set up a class of our own, and get you started on the right path to your dream job!!

Jared has been designing and creating rings for several years now. It all started out as a romantic gift idea for Valentines day and unexpectedly became a majority of Jared's income. He comes from a construction family so working with the necessary machinery to produce his rings wasn't difficult for him to master. Because Jared spends so much time on the road, working remotely with his construction crew, he had to find a way to make his rings in hotel rooms without leaving a massive mess or disturbing other guests. He has trimmed down his gear to what he can easily carry on the road, which also minimises his space at home, which is also his office.

Jared's primary passion lies with wood rings, specifically bentwood rings. He has developed his own steam bending, inlaying, and finishing techniques to produce the sturdiest rings with intricate and unique designs.

"I love what I do and truly believe each and every ring that leaves my shop clearly expresses my dedication to the craft!"

A local to Kitchener, Ontario, videographer Phil Marques has always had an interest to combine his love for music and videography together!

Phil has three years of communications technology education and two years of stage production under his belt. He received a one year certificate for Media Foundations at Conestoga College, and a diploma for the two year Broadcast (TV) Program.

Phil has had the privilege of working with local artists such as Breaching Vista, Amberwood, The Red Factor, Red Handed Denial, Shae Dupuy and To The Trees. As well as big touring acts such as Texas In July, August Burns Red, Adam Gontier, One Bad Son, and Say Yes!

Lesson 1: Getting Your Music Discovered Worldwide

Check this out! My guest this week is Angelo, a fan from Paris! Angelo booked a skype lesson with me and it ended up turning into an amazing conversation about live music from the perspective of two people from across the world.

I wanted to ask Angelo how the music scene in Paris was and he wanted to get a better idea of what Warped Tour was all about.

Angelo and I discuss the end of Warped Tour and what that means for America.
