Dr. Summers applies engineering principles to biological and chemical systems. His lab is working on metabolically engineering bacteria and yeast cells to produce chemicals, fuels, and pharmaceuticals.

The core topics of research performed in Dr. Shaughnessy's lab are the development of novel ligands for aqueous catalysis and structure-activity relationship for ligands. Dr. Shaughnessy received his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska, a Ph.D. from Stanford University, and a postdoctoral associate degree from Yale University.

Join two undergraduates from the Emerging Scholars Program as they talk with Dr. Michael McKain—an Assistant Professor of Biology and Curator of the University of Alabama Herbarium—about life as a Biologist, academics, research, and everything in-between. Dr. McKain's work focuses on plant systematics, genomics, and polyploidy, and he leads a laboratory studying Johnsongrass genetics on the University's campus.
