Prophecy In The Spotlight with Daniel Goodwin
The Church and Apostasy: Deception, Biblical Truth, and the Warning for the Last Days
Dan Goodwin Introduces the Warning About Deception
In this episode of Prophecy in the Spotlight, host Dan Goodwin is joined in the studio by co-host Dr. Charles Hiltibidal for a discussion about the church and apostasy. Dan opens by reading from Matthew 24 and focusing on Jesus’ response to the disciples’ questions about His coming and the end of the age. Rather than beginning with wars, earthquakes, pestilence, or other dramatic prophetic signs, Dan emphasizes that Jesus first warned His followers not to be deceived. For Dan and Charles, this makes spiritual deception one of the most important prophetic issues facing Christians in what they understand to be the last days.
Defining Apostasy as a Willful Departure from Truth
Dan reads from his book, The Great End Time Apostasy, and turns to 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, where the King James Bible refers to a coming “falling away.” He explains that the word apostasy is derived from this idea of falling away and cites Webster’s 1828 dictionary definition as an abandonment or departure from one’s professed faith. Charles adds that apostasy is more than drifting or becoming confused; in his view, it is a willful turning away from truth. Together, they define biblical truth as the Word of God and argue that apostasy occurs when professing Christians or Christian leaders move away from what Scripture teaches.
Deceivers, Delusion, and the Threat Within Christianity
Dan and Charles continue by defining deception as being led into error, ensnared, misled, or caused to believe what is false while disbelieving what is true. They connect that definition with their reading of 2 Thessalonians, where they say the Antichrist is revealed amid a strong delusion after the removal of spiritual restraint. While they discuss deception in the wider world, they place special emphasis on deception arising from within Christianity itself. Dan states that apostasy concerns people who have professed faith and then turn from truth, while Charles argues that Christian leadership can first become deceived and then pass that deception on to others.
The King James Bible and Their Concern for the Modern Church
A major portion of the episode centers on Dan and Charles’s conviction that churches must preserve and promote the Word of God. They argue that the church is responsible for protecting biblical truth and express concern that many churches have weakened their authority by turning from the King James Bible to modern translations. Dan references another of his books, The KJB: The Gold Standard, and associates what he considers an earlier period of Christian revival with widespread use of the King James Bible. They contrast that period with what they identify as the present Laodicean church age, which they believe is characterized by spiritual decline, weakened doctrine, and a departure from scriptural authority.
Leadership, Pride, and Changing Measures of Success
Dan and Charles also criticize what they see as unhealthy patterns among contemporary Christian leaders and ministries. They say success is now often measured through attendance numbers, financial income, social-media followers, and public visibility rather than faithfulness to Scripture. They object to preachers publicly attacking other ministers, including individuals who have been dead for years, and warn listeners against accepting accusations that cannot be proven. Relating this to 2 Timothy chapter 3, they argue that pride, self-promotion, criticism, and the influence of wider culture have weakened Christian witness. In their view, churches are called to affect culture through Christlike conduct rather than allowing cultural attitudes to reshape the church.
Guarding Against Apostasy and Preparing for Future Discussion
In the closing portion, Dan and Charles offer practical guidance for avoiding deception. They encourage listeners to know and love the Bible, test teachings and spiritual claims against Scripture, develop wisdom and discernment, be cautious about sensational claims involving signs and wonders, resist the desire for novelty, and maintain fellowship with people who strengthen rather than undermine faith. Dan concludes by warning that deception is already present and that Christians must remain vigilant. He also previews the next episode, which will address UFOs from the program’s prophetic and biblical perspective.
