Doctors are warning that a plan by the Federal Government to let patients bypass their GP to get a specialist referral could lead to a US-style health system and longer waits for specialities in high demand.

Under the proposed changes, patients would be able to get a referral from other medical professionals, including physiotherapists and midwives, without needing to return to their doctor.

Luke Grant chats with the President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Dr Nicole Higgins, to find out what GP’s make of the plan.
