Episode 3 // Season 4

An episode all about Sholem Aleichem. Katerina Kuznetsova talks about the beloved Yiddish writer and why it’s so worthwhile to read his work. And I talk a little about some resources for reading Sholem Aleichem in Yiddish if you’re a Yiddish learner.

We’re back with a fourth season of Yiddish listening practice on Proste Yiddish. This episode: my favourite story to tell about my cat Prince, and a short report from a listener about the history of the Yiddish language and its dialects. If you find it a bit challenging remember you can adjust the playback speed in your player and follow the transcript to help with your comprehension.
Do you want easier or harder episodes? Any topic or vocab in particular you’d like to hear more of - let us know!

In this episode we hear from a listener, Elisheva, about her interest in sewing and learning about Jewish clothing. And I share a bit about one of my interests: Yiddish on Youtube. All the links are in the transcripts but you can also find most of the videos via the playlists on our Youtube channel.
Plus there’s a little message from David, another listener, about his new Youtube channel, Polyglot Reading.
This is the last episode of Season 3 so there will be a little break and we’ll be back in a few weeks with Season 4.

Another interview! I spoke with Jake Schneider about a shmues krayz that he organises in Berlin called “Shmues un Vayn”. This was recorded over zoom so apologies for the audio quality.

Episode 7 // Season 3
אין דעם עפּיזאָד רעד איך װעגן לײענען און זײער אַ װיכטיקע רעסורס - דער ייִדישער טעם־טעם. דער ייִדישער טעם־טעם איז אַ זשורנאַל פֿאַר ייִדיש לערנערס.
In this episode I talk a little about what kind of materials are most useful for language learners and a great resource for Yiddish learners - Der Yiddisher Tam-Tam. It’s a little magazine that was published for many years and is full of articles written just for Yiddish learners.
I read an excerpt from an article published in the 100th issue of Der Yiddisher Tam-tam. There’s a little bit of tricky vocab, and unlike Tam-Tam we don’t have footnotes, so be sure to check the transcript for vocab notes.

Bonus Episode // Season 3
אַ צוגאָב עפּיזאָד פֿאַר אַדװאַנצירטע ייִדיש־לערנערס - דער גאַנצער אינטערװיו מיט חנה פּאָלאַקען, אַרכיװאַר בײַם פֿאָרװערץ
This is a special episode - I had some requests for longer episodes for advanced students so this episode is the full interview that I conducted with Chana Pollack, archivist at The Forward (דער פֿאָרװערץ).
The language in this episode is a lot more complicated than our usual format, and of course it’s a lot longer. So if you’re not ready for this much Yiddish don’t worry, we’ll be back next week with a regular episode.
The article Chana wrote about LGBTQ stories in the Forward archive is here.
