So many of us take breathing – a vital bodily function – for granted because it happens on an unconscious level. So much so that we're oblivious to how our lungs work or what factors could potentially put us at risk.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death of both men and women in the United States. Chronic lower respiratory disease is the #4 cause of death. Nearly 37 million Americans live with chronic lung disease. With those stats in mind, it’s critical that we understand not only the circumstances that lead to respiratory illness and disease but to learn about and apply preventative measures to protect your lungs over a lifetime.
Today, I speak with Dr. MeiLan Han in-depth about respiratory health. Dr. Han is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of Michigan. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Han is a spokesperson for the American Lung Association and serves on the scientific advisory committees for both the COPD Foundation and American Lung Association. She is currently an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and serves on several editorial boards.
MeiLan is also the author of “Breathing Lessons: A Doctor’s Guide to Lung Health” (coming 11/2/21)
In this episode, we discuss:
· How the lungs function
· Common risk factors for respiratory illness and disease
· The dangers of smoking and vaping
· Using nutrition to optimize fetal lung development
· The importance of clean air
· The role of exercise in long-term respiratory health
· Mask efficacy in preventing transmission of respiratory infections
· How to protect your lungs for life
· Breathing techniques that strengthen the lungs in people with chronic lung disease
· Who's at greater risk of developing respiratory illness
· The lung microbiome
· And so much more!
