❓What are words?
You’re probably thinking: “Alright Fred… where are we going with this?”
But hold up—just by either hearing these sounds that I’m making or seeing these symbols on your screen that represent my thoughts, your train of thought has been already aligned with mine. That means I caught your attention and transferred part of my inner world and thoughts to your inner world and thoughts. Just like that. Through sound and symbol, we’ve had a meeting of the minds. That’s the power of words.
So, in four minutes, I probably can’t tell you what words are, but I can tell you what words are like.
1. 📦 Words Are Like Containers
Words are units of thought…defined and contained. They carry meaning, feeling, memory, purpose.
Words are like mental Tupperware—they store what was once fluid and formless, and make it something others can open, digest, and carry with them.
In the Christian tradition, we believe God created the universe with words:
“Let there be…” And there was.
God didn’t build the world with His hands. He built it with his mouth. He framed it with thought-filled words.
And here’s the wild part: we do too. We’re walking around inside of someone else’s words— Buildings, contracts, countries, apps, missions, marriages—all started as words.
You live inside words. You also get trapped by them.
That’s the heart of Proverbs 6:2:
You’re snared by your agreements. Caught by what you said.
Sometimes it’s not what was done to you that’s the trap—it’s what you agreed to. A thought. A label. A phrase you repeated without thinking:
* “I’ll never be enough.”
* “This always happens to me.”
* “Oh it’s my fault.”
That’s not just talk. That’s spiritual contract language.
2. 🗝 Words Are Like Keys
Now just like Proverbs 6:2 informs us that we can get snared by our own words,
Here’s the good news: The same thing (namely words) that trap can also unlock.
Yea, they are like keys. They trap, but they also transform by opening doors, launching healing, and releasing identity.
In Scripture, people often “said within themselves”—and that inner monologue activated something divine:
“If I can just touch His garment…” (Matthew 9:21) That wasn’t spoken out loud, but it still opened heaven.
Your inner agreements matter. Your self-talk has spiritual weight.
Jesus said, “By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:37)
So ask yourself:
* What locks have I been turning?
* What keys am I carrying every time I speak?
You don’t have to wait for someone else to open the door. Sometimes the key is already in your mouth.
3. 🌊 Words Are Like Currents
They move us all.
Think about ocean currents. Some are soft and warm and carry you to peace. Others are riptides—they pull you under before you even realize it.
That’s what happens with conversations, culture, music, inner narratives. You start riding one thought and suddenly—you’re miles away from peace, lost in anxiety, fear, or cynicism and you’re scrolling!
Your words create internal currents. And you get to choose which ones carry you.
The question is: What current are you riding today?
* One that lifts you?
* One that carries you deeper into truth?
* Or one that slowly sweeps you into shame, regret, or compromise?
Proverbs 6:2 is a warning and an invitation:
Be careful what you agree to—spoken or silent. Because what you say sets your direction.
Words are containers, keys, and currents.
What you speak is where you sail.
Prayer
Let my words carry life—freeing me and guiding others.
Today’s Challenge
Write down one limiting belief you’ve spoken or accepted.
Now flip it.
Speak the truth that God says about you—out loud.
Repeat it. Ride that current.
Let your language carry you somewhere better
