We need to ensure the basic needs of all people are met. People must have all of their essentials. Any system that excludes people from basic protections and provision will cause widespread suffering. Too many are going without. What happens when you work your whole life simply to survive and just the right circumstances hit you to make you disabled or too sick to work? What happens when you are hit with a series of crises you cannot overcome? You become homeless and you go without basic provision. Oftentimes you suffer a long while and then you die of exposure or the health problem. It should not be this way for anyone. People who are ultra-rich and influential have a social obligation to improve things for the rest of humanity. Much is required of those to whom much is given. Yet this is seldom the way things work out. The result is that callous people who not only know of these difficulties the vulnerable are having but do not care - take advantage in the worst ways imaginable. People living in deep poverty are far more likely to be enslaved in present day “work for housing” or “work for room and board” schemes in places like broken down motels or kitchens at restaurants. Many of these establishments are run by people who have slavery and social castes that condone or justify it in their home countries. This is illegal but it happens openly because no one advocates for these poor people. What good are laws and social protections no one enforces to protect the poor and those likely to be exploited? As a Christian Nation we must not allow Capitalism to prevail over our values. Slavery is a sin.
