The social services system for children in America is not for those children or the poor families they most often come from. It services its own financial interests, taking massive payments from the federal government and from the legalized sale of children through adopting out children they have essentially stolen for little to no reason in many cases. The family court system essentially pays lip service and patronizes these parents who are held hostage along with their children until they meet arbitrary requirements to extricate themselves and get their children back without any outside support. Parents rarely have the capacity to afford legal representation or the nonsensical classes social services demands they complete such as a video on toxic culture. Media forty to fifty years outdated is used for educational materials. The whole process is aimed at the state placing the families and their children under what usually equates to needless stress, added financial hardship, and stealing months or even years of times from all parties involved. These are often critical years developmentally for the children involved. It is a process you survive without any benefit to you or your children at the end of it. The agency and the courts keep all of the money that is exchanged between the various parties and the family is nearly always left with a large financial debt, if they had any credit or savings to begin with. It can set you back years or even permanently. This is just one reason why people hate The Department of Family and Protective Services so much. The money the Department gets from the state and federal government needs to be directed at helping the families instead of paying useless court-appointed attorneys, legal fees, classes that teach nothing, and case workers who simply provide lip service and not actual service. By the time the process is over with these families will do anything to avoid ending up being further victimized by the welfare system again. It’s agenda is only helpful in the most egregious of abuse, neglect, and exploitation cases. Imagine the good all of that money could do if it was redirected at providing direct assistance and support to the people the system is supposed to service... That is what the social welfare system should be doing: Lift the families up out of the hardship they are in by providing them direct financial assistance, housing, utility help, payment for college tuition and books, food, clothing, transportation, and medical services. If we did even half of that we would likely change the lives of all involved for the better on a permanent basis. Instead the DFPS System rips families apart, penalizes all parties, and brings extreme distress to the families it should be helping. They assume fault for a person’s circumstances lies entirely with them as an adult without doing deeper study of family history beyond just the parents or guardians involved. Their assessments are superficial and lack the in-depth knowledge needed to address root causes of familial problems that lead to contact with their agency. They do not care what your immediate circumstances are or how you got into those circumstances most of the time. Imagine being a parent doing the best you can and you are bounded endlessly because of perceived vulnerability, racism on part of members of the community and workers at the agency, and the fact that you are poverty stricken. Families need a break and direct financial help rather than further penalty to set them back. Termination of parent-child relationship should be a last resort in most cases. They need to do more to help families mitigate hardship rather than dissolving family units and destroying lives.
