The Fugs came from the Lower East side of New York and became the first proper underground rock band. They used satire, humor and innuendos to put their views and messages across to a broader audience beyond those that attended small gatherings to hear beat poems recite their words in coffee houses. Led by Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupenberg, they are legendary and revered as true proponents of freedom of expression.

In this Classic Album series, we're going to listen to Country Joe and The Fish's "Electric Music For The Mind and Body'. It was released in May of 1967, a few weeks before they performed at The Monterey International Pop Festival. The record contained a variety of musical styles like pop, blues, experimental psychedelic rock. And it was done with melody, humor and precise instrumentation. This was the most impressive debut album by most of the Bay Area bands. This is in tribute to Joe MacDonald wo passed away this month.

Frank Zappa began to produce his own albums and learned to use the studio as a creative vehicle for his vast musical ideas. This was his third album with The Mothers of Invention, and perhaps their most consistent of their works. It's a wonderful blend of parody, musicality and humor.

in 1968, The Grateful Dead recorded and assembled their second album. "Anthem of The Sun" was a mix of recorded studio tracks as well as live tapes blended together in order to create something sonically new. What they created was their most experimental album ever and a landmark of the Psychedelic era.

Pink Floyd recorded several seminal albums during the 1970's. They were on the cutting edge of recording technology and had an advance lighting system for their live performances, which they added other props to enhance their live show presentation. But before they became known as a great live attraction with impressive recordings, there was a period where the band was trying to find their own identity after original singer and songwriter, Syd Barrett left the band. It was a period of sonic experimentation and concept development. Roger Waters stepped up to be the band's lyricist while the others developed the music. It was both a creative time and also and eccentric time for the band musically. These are select tracks from this period before they recorded their great album "Dark Side of The Moon".

Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke earned success twice. Their first band, Free, was an English blues rock band with great songs, along with the talented guitarist Paul Kossoff, Free became a promising band entering the 1970s. Then they formed Bad Company after Free's demise. Bad Company became one of the best arena rock bands that dominated FM radio throughout the 1970's. These are select tracks from both.

They are one of the greatest bands of all time that have been surrounded by mystique and wonder. Led Zeppelin were the dominant band of the late 1960's and ruled over the 1970s. The band leaves a short but powerful legacy with their sound, their image and it's been a blueprint for other bands to copy and follow. This is Led Zeppelin.

30 years ago, England's two top bands were engaged in a rivalry created by the British music press. It was initially, to illicit record sales, but after a few remarks from the bands, it became personal. Blur and Oasis traded barbs, while bkth bands recorded their best work. these are select tracks from the two leaders of 1990's Britpop.
