Starting off with one of the most influential horror films most people haven’t seen, the grisly 1932 masterpiece The Most Dangerous Game, from the same team who would unleash King Kong on world a year later. This tale of Russian Count Zaroff living on a remote island, and his perverse desire for new game to hunt has had countless imitators, possibly even including the Zodiac killer. Made over 40 years later, our second feature Countess Perverse, is one of these imitations. Though far from being a lazy remake, the brilliant Jess Franco turns the material into something truly his own, with gorgeous barely clad babes, eye popping locations, and the most succulent meals. Thundercrack! the mutant lovechild of director Curt McDowell and legendary underground superstar George Kuchar, combines hoary old dark house conventions, soap opera melodrama, with anything goes hardcore pornography, and witty whip-cracking dialogue that leaves the viewer in a constant state of joyous disbelief. Despite its epic roadshow length of 160 minutes that justifies a 10 minute intermission, Thundercrack! never seems to run out of new ideas that keep it continually entertaining. Truly a singular piece of psychotronic sleaze!

This time Alec and Derek take a look at Toshio Matsumoto’s 1969 kaleidoscopic reimagining of Oedipus Rex, Funeral Parade Of Roses (薔薇の葬列). Eddie, played by Japanese trans star Peter, works her way up the hierarchy of late 60’s Tokyo gay bars, by dancing, screwing and serving killer looks with her band of fellow queers and hippies, while gradually sinking into the depths of familial tragedy. This experimental masterpiece of the Japanese new wave, mixes genres and cinematic techniques, and would prove a major influence on Stanley Kubrick’s classic A Clockwork Orange. It’s power hasn’t dimmed in the fifty years since its release.
