Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is the beginning of Buddhist practice. It marks the moment we become disciples of the Buddha.
Just as a visa is required to enter another country, taking refuge is like a visa that opens the path toward Buddhahood.
Yet taking refuge is far more than a ceremony. It contains a profound path of inner cultivation.
Whether we receive precepts or awaken the Bodhi Mind, taking refuge in the Three Jewels is always the foundation.
Although everyone takes refuge, the depth of one’s practice depends upon the intention behind it.
Taking refuge out of fear of suffering in the lower realms is the motivation of the initial path.
Taking refuge to seek one’s own liberation belongs to the intermediate path.
Taking refuge with the aspiration to benefit and liberate all beings is the motivation of the highest path.
From believing in the Buddha’s teachings to formally taking refuge, we have already taken an important step forward.
Whether refuge truly transforms our lives depends on how deeply we understand the Three Jewels and how firmly we place our trust in them.
It is worth asking ourselves: Do the Three Jewels truly hold the highest place in our hearts?
Do we genuinely allow the Dharma to guide our lives, and the precepts to shape our actions?
Are our body, speech, and mind becoming more aligned with the Three Jewels?
These questions reveal how deeply we have truly taken refuge.
As followers of the Buddha, we not only bow before Buddha images, sutras, and the Sangha, but continually remember the qualities of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.
Before each meal, or whenever we receive something precious, we can first offer it inwardly to the Three Jewels with gratitude and reverence.
In this way, the Three Jewels become ever more vivid and irreplaceable within our hearts.
In the preliminary practices of Tibetan Buddhism, practitioners often recite the refuge prayer hundreds of thousands of times, accompanied by prostrations and offerings.
These are not empty rituals, but powerful methods for strengthening faith and spiritual resolve.
Zen Buddhism, by contrast, places greater emphasis on realizing the Three Jewels within one’s own true nature.
The saying, “The Buddha of our true nature,” reminds us to awaken the innate wisdom already present within.
This represents an even deeper form of refuge and a subtler way of practice.
It asks us to remain continuously aware, never departing from the present moment.
Naturally, such practice is also far more demanding.
Yet regardless of the method, the purpose remains the same.
It is to continually remember the Three Jewels, ensuring they are never overshadowed by worldly desires.
Learning the Buddha’s path is, in a sense, like wholeheartedly following someone we deeply admire.
The difference is that we are not chasing fame or celebrity.
We aspire to embody the wisdom, compassion, and awakening of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
May the Three Jewels become the highest example in our lives, and may the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas become the direction of our own transformation.
May taking refuge be not merely a ceremony, but a lifelong journey of practice.
