How can public policies uplift communities and promote healing? In this episode, we interview Zamir M. Brown, MPH to discuss the impact of equitable public policies. The primary driver of public health policies need to center around restructuring our systems to include restorative justice practices, involvement in advocacy, and respectful ways to approach political conversations.

We focus on gender terminology, how gender effects your healthcare, and current public policies that impact gender non-conforming people. Social constructs of the gender binary disadvantages those outside of the binary and is the basis poor health outcomes of communities. The gender identities discussed are not limited by the definitions we share; gender identity and expression are limitless.

We share the story of a beloved Black and Indigenous family in a North Portland neighborhood who faced the trauma of eviction, displacement, and racial discrimination during the pandemic. The Kinney family rallied support from the community and showed their resilience against all odds: false reporting, death threats, and police brutality. We give credit to the family's lived experience by reading two of the press releases from the Red House on Mississippi and relating their experience back to the impact on health.
