  • How To Run a Recording Session With John Vanderslice | WASTOIDS Hotline

John Vanderslice has been one of the most dynamic and interesting indie rock artists for decades, and a world class producer for artists like Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie, The Mountain Goats and more. With his new album Crystals 3.0, he abandons the guitar in favor of pure electronic texture.

In this episode of Hotline, Vanderslice answers your questions from the 1-877-WASTOIDS answering machine, sharing tips and tricks for managing vibes in a recording studio, his favorite places to eat, and how visiting Japan expanded his mind. Vanderslice's studio was recently looted—check out this fund to cover some losses.

  • The Spindle: Red Transistor "Not Bite" b/w "We're Not Crazy"

The notorious No Wave band Red Transistor didn't actually release anything in their short existence—but their posthumous single "Not Bite" / "We're Not Crazy," recorded in 1977 but released by Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label in 1990. The single showcases how ahead of their time this chaotic noise punk band was, both in the cutting riffs, repetition, and rants of Rudolph Grey and Von Lmo and their legendarily destructive shows in which little on stage survived.

  • Mixtape: Brain A's Yo! WASTOIDS

For the last decade plus, Will “Brain A” Currier has cooked up a curiously genre-defiant blend of electronic music and post-punk grind, delivered with lo-fi hip-hop ease. Known for his work with cyberpunk artist N8NOFACE and now defunct instrumental outfit The Analog Sweat, Currier is currently holed up in his desert lab fine tuning work on a forthcoming project named BRAINFIEND, a collaboration with rapper Mykr Fiend X of the longest running hip-hop collective in Phoenix, The Avenue of the Arts Crew, which features collabs with Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship, Grandmaster Caz, and Sadat X of Brand Nubian. His beats can also be heard in WASTOIDS season one.

For Yo! WASTOIDS, Currier offers a retrospective mix—15 years in 15 minutes—featuring his beat juggling skills, sound collage edits, and collaborations with N8NOFACE, Sadat x, Myka 9, and more.

Check out YouTube and Instagram for more Brain A goodness.

  • The Spindle: Halo of Flies, "Big Mod Hate Trip"

Today on The Spindle, Marc and John dig into a purist 7-inch band: Minnesota's Halo of Flies, whose discography is practically all singles. Guitarist Tom Hazelmyer launched the Amphetamine Reptile label to put out music by the trio; it eventually became a home for noise rock stalwarts Helmet, Cows, and Unsane, but Halo of Flies stood out in the grunge era as a band unafraid to put catchy melodies inside swirling feedback. Dig it!

  • The Spindle: "One Nation Under A Groove" Parts I & II

Today on The Spindle, Marc and John drop the needle on the biggest single by Funkadelic, 1978's "One Nation Under A Groove" Parts I & II. Riding the top of the Billboard Soul charts for six weeks, this song was Funkadelic's National Anthem, a call for unity catalyzed by gigantic funk hooks. Devoted to hitting the "one," the group turns well-worn words into new mantras, all in service of a groove that seemed like it could last forever.
