Today on WASTOIDS With, we're talking with country singer and raconteur Dale Hollow. "Yours truly" might possess signature yellow lens glasses and a Manu Ginobili-like frame—with a wit and tongue ‘n cheek bravado to match—but behind all that is a distinct voice, delivered with the ease of a natural songsmith. For this WASTOIDS chat, Hollow sits down with Duwaun Johnson of The Country Brothers to talk about how he hooked up with masked singer Orville Peck, his love of basketball, his cover of the 2010 dance sensation “Dancing on My Own” by Robyn, and his favorite Coen Brothers movies.

Crack open the new vinyl edition of The Special Goodness’ Land Air Sea, and what you’ll find in the gatefold liner notes isn’t an essay on the recording process, an invocation of the band’s songwriting influences, or anything related to the actual tunes. Instead, you’ll find a statement from Pat Wilson of Weezer about his and Atom Willard’s shared obsession: vintage cars.
From the cover of Land Air Sea to the bitchin’ new shirt over for sale, cars and trucks play heavy into the Special Goodness mythology. So for this episode, Weezer historian Karl Koch is focusing on the open road—discussing tours and Pat and Atom’s gearhead tendencies. Wanna share your favorite Special Goodness song? Give us a call at 1-877-WASTOIDS.
On this episode of Click Vortex, we're talking about musicians who have seen UFOs, including George Clinton of Parliament/Funkadelic, Stevie Nicks, Frank Black of The Pixies, and Kendrick Lamar. Then, we explore the lounge jazz of Paul McCartney's side project Thrillington, the artistic spirit of Linda McCartney, Electric Light Orchestra, Roy Wood, and the true crime rock & roll saga of drummer Binky McKenzie.
About Click Vortex: Sam Means (Hello Merch/The Format) and Jason P. Woodbury (Aquarium Drunkard) spend too much time online, clicking through random corners of the internet. On this biweekly program, they document and explore the strange corners of "The Net" they find themselves backed into.
Click Vortex is brought to you by WASTOIDS, audio/video made in partnership with Hello Merch. Share your thoughts on the show by calling us at 1-877-WASTOIDS.
Hey, welcome to WASTOIDS With Jaan Uhelszki of the legendary CREEM Magazine. Founded in Detroit in 1969, CREEM covered rock & roll irreverently and with a wickedly funny style. It closed up shop in 1989, but 30 years later, a new documentary film, 2019’s CREEM: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine, helped to reignite interest in the publication, and now, CREEM has returned in full force over at CREEM.com. Not only is the site home to a remarkable archive—featuring stories by Lester Bangs, Cameron Crowe, Patti Smith, Greil Marcus, Lisa Robinson, Susan Whitall, Dave Marsh, Robert Christgau, our guest Jaan, and so many others—it’s also home to brand new features, interviews, articles, and music recommendations.
We launched WASTOIDS last year for a lot of reasons, but one of the main ones is that it feels increasingly like music fans are looking for original and fun places to discover new music. CREEM was one of our primary inspirations. Uhelszki joins us for stories about the pot-fueled “cult of CREEM,” her role in its return, seeing Big Star live, and that time she got up on stage with KISS in full regalia.
Thanks for listening. Call 1-877-WASTOIDS.
Welcome to the Special Pod-ness, a four-part mini-series dedicated to the history of The Special Goodness by the three dudes who (probably) know it best: Pat Wilson of Weezer, drummer Atom Willard (Rocket From the Crypt, Plosivs, Against Me!) and Karl Koch, Weezer historian.
As we celebrate the brand new red-colored vinyl edition of the band’s third album, Land Air Sea, Pat, Atom, and Karl take us back to the ‘90s and early 2000s to share stories about the ins and outs of the music industry, run-ins with other bands and musicians, and the making of the record. This episode focuses on the MTV Music Awards, Atom Willard meeting the Weezer/Special Goodness crew, and that time Jay Leno ended up knocking on Pat's door—and by the way, Elvis is involved.
On this episode of The Spindle, Marc and John dig into a single by Columbus, Ohio's Scrawl. Released by the Arlington-based label Simple Machines and recorded in Chicago by lauded producer Steve Albini, this early single came in a unique origami package and its sound is gnarly but literate, a tale of familial abuse and reckoning.
About The Spindle: The 7-inch record isn’t just a format—it’s an art form. On each episode of The Spindle podcast, music writer Marc Masters and music historian (and music maker) John Howard dive into a great 7-inch, dissecting its background, impact, and the reasons why it stands out as a small plastic piece of music history.

We're all over the place this episode of Click Vortex, touching on everything from the bubblegum pop of The Cowsills and The Association to the rock antics of The Who and The Ramones, the brilliance of the recently canceled Joe Pera Talks With You, and porn star Traci Lords' forays into electronic music. Along the way, Sam debuts some new vocal delay tricks and Jason offers a report on the dining and filmgoing scene in...uh...Casa Grande, AZ, circa the 1990s. Today on WASTOIDS With…we’re talking to poet/folk singer/truth teller Willi Carlisle, who’s new album Peculiar, Missouri comes out July 15th on Free Dirt Records. Based in Arkansas, Carlisle’s approach mixes playfulness with unabashed honesty and emotional storytelling, and his conversation does the same, discussing homogeneity in country music, the punk music that shaped him, and the worst meal he ate while touring Europe. This episode is hosted by Duwaun Johnson, one half of the Country Brothers podcast, which offers insightful and comedic Black perspectives on country music.
