Performance - A parody commercial in which we'll hack the system!
Epic-fantasy world builder Lashaaawn satirises mainstream media by portraying it
as a prime-time talk show, complete with commercial breaks and live
performances, providing a critical examination of societal norms and systems of
oppression. During the PublicSpaces Conference, catch a glimpse of the show
through one of its parody commercials.
Currently, as part of their Scout Night development grant by Stimuleringsfonds
Creatieve Industrie, Lashaaawn is conducting research on digitalisation and
societal progress. They address concerns like discriminatory algorithms on
social media platforms that disproportionately impact marginalised communities,
including LGTBQI+ individuals. Lashaaawn also delves into the role of AI in
cultural appropriation, emphasising the risk of cultural erasure with
superficial adoption.
To be excluded because of your cultural heritage, gender identity, or other ways
of being and expression is beyond an individual’s control, and rooted in the
oppressive systems of our Western society. Thankfully systems can be hacked.
Drag performance for example is a way for the members of the queer community to
navigate and bypass the exclusion they are subjected to. To safeguard cultural
heritage and diverse forms of expression, Lashaaawn embeds them within their
self-created epic fantasy and performance world, serving as a time capsule away
from external oppression. Lashaaawn aims to contribute to building the digital
infrastructure necessary for advancing and amplifying invaluable artistic and
cultural discourse. This work ensures the continuity of their stories and those
of their communities, undisturbed.

Panel - Moving from X to Mastodon with PublicSpaces
Over the past five months, we have been exploring the decentralised platform
Mastodon with five partners from the PublicSpaces Coalition. Some organisations
have completely switched from X to Mastodon, others are on both as of now. How
did this process go and what are the lessons learned? In this finale of the eXit
campaign, we pay attention to this with two of the participating partners: Tetem
and SURF.
In the panel session 'What's neXt: From Mastodon via ActivityPub to the
Fediverse or Social Web', these organisations will participate in an in-depth
discussion.

Panel - How can this platform connect audiences?
PubHubs is a Dutch digital community network based on public values. PubHubs is
open and transparent, and protects users' data and identities. Organisations and
communities can connect through their own Hub. Once logged in, users can easily
switch from one Hub to another with a different identity in each Hub.
In this session, we will demonstrate the beta version of the PubHubs platform
and engage with the audience. As an organisation, how would you like to set up
your own Hub? What components are important for your organisation, and how would
you like to shape moderation? What do you see as the main advantages as well as
stumbling blocks to using PubHubs? In the workshop, we will design a Hub
together for a number of different organisational contexts. Your input is
needed!

Panel - What do we teach our children? With ao. Barbara Kathmann
Children are growing up in a world infused with AI and ever-new forms of AI
technology. As described by SLO (the Dutch national curriculum expertise centre)
in the draft key objectives for digital literacy (March 2024), schools will soon
be expected to explore with pupils "how AI systems work" and "how digital
technology, digital media and society interact".
A curriculum overhaul to address the more and more constant presence of AI might
seem to be the obvious response. But a caveat should be made. The creators
behind AI technology exert great influence on how the AI living world is
designed. There, corporate interests often outweigh public values, and there is
little proper, democratic control. With that in mind, can or should we expect
teachers to make pupils digitally literate in relation to AI? How does education
move forward in this context? What responsibility belongs to the school and what
responsibility belongs to market players, government and politics?
During this panel led by Remco Pijpers, experts and stakeholders will discuss
what the development of AI and our corresponding need for digital literacy mean
for our society as a whole and for teachers specifically.

Panel - Strategies for responsible AI training in media with Natali Helberger, Paul Keller, Hanneke Holthuis, Daan Odijk & Dayana Spagnuelo
The use of media content for training Generative AI models is subject to intense
controversies. Some media organisations are closing deals with companies such as
OpenAI about the use of their contents for training (like Springer), others take
the ways to the courts to object to their data being used (New York Times vs
Open AI) or might consider training their own models. All of them struggle with
the challenge of sorting out the conditions for using media data for training AI
models in a way that, on the one hand, respects the (intellectual) property
rights, economic and competitive interests of the media, and on the other hand,
contributes to more responsible models, trained on high-quality and
multi-language content. Looking more broadly, the provision of high-quality,
publicly available data for AI training is seen as a measure needed to break
concentrations of power - since these largely depend on asymmetries in access to
data. Media is one such category of public interest data sources, alongside
research or heritage data.
The goal of this panel is to map the different competing interests and
considerations and explore the extent to which regulations such as the AI Act or
the Directive on Copyrights and the Single Market offer workable solutions and
where there is room for improvement. As Europe aims to build common data spaces
for media, the panel will map out different potential strategies.

Talk - From Mastodon via ActivityPub to the Fediverse or Social Web
Earlier this year, PublicSpaces launched eXit: a journey in which a number of
PublicSpaces partners have been experimenting step-by-step with Mastodon (which
is part of the Fediverse). Some have even taken the step to quit X (Twitter)
completely. In this session, we will dive even deeper into the Fediverse! Don't
know anything about the Fediverse yet? No worries, after this session you will
be completely up-to-date!
Alexandra van Straaten (SURF) and Marleen van Houts (Tetem) talk about their
experiences with eXit. This is followed by Manfred Zielinski (Ministry of the
Interior and Kingdom Relations) on the social web, Mastodon, Fediverse and
ActivityPub for government bodies. Finally, we are introduced to Eelco Maljaars,
manager of the Mastodon servers Mastodon.nl, social.overheid.nl and co-initiator
of the ActivityClub Foundation - whose aim is 'to sustainably stimulate, develop
and maintain the organisational and technical aspects of public (social)
networks based, among others, on the ActivityPub protocol such as Mastodon,
Pixelfed and PeerTube in the Dutch-speaking region'.
Together with moderator Laurens Hof, Fediverse expert and founder of the
newsletter Fediverse Report [https://fediversereport.com], we will discuss which
other interesting possibilities Fediverse and the ActivityPub protocol offer for
public organisations. Of course, there will also be room to ask questions to our
panelists.
