Tonight was a special Father's Day edition of Someone You Should Know. Bruce McQuain from QandO.net, a Vietnam veteran with 28-year's experience in the U.S. Army, does a wonderful job with this series because he knows of what speaks, and he crafts beautiful narratives about these heroes.

Tonight, he told us about Raynham, Mass. native Jared C. Monti. He did so not through media accounts, but from the comments of Jared's fellow soldiers. It is an amazing testimonial to the kind of soldier and person he was.

Immediately following Bruce's moving tribute, we were honored to welcome Paul Monti, Jared's father. This was a difficult night for Paul, last Father's Day was the last time he spoke to Jared, he was killed three days later, on June 21, 2006.

Paul spoke movingly about his son, the determined kid, how he made the high school varsity basketball team on his third try, and ended the season as one of the teams best players. Jared was always sticking up for the little guy. He was the kind of man that every father would be busting with pride to call their son.

Last night Jared's family and friends held a poker tournament and raised $17,000 for a scholarship fund in his honor benefiting students from Bridgewater-Raynham high school.

As part of his Project Hero series at QandO.net Bruce McQuain profiled recipients of the the Silver Star. Of SFC Gerald A. Wolford he wrote the following,

"Wolford and his crew epitomize the everyday valor displayed by members of our armed forces. The camaraderie, professionalism and the vow never to let their buddies down are all evident in the way this crew fought, endured and persevered. They are soldiers of whom we should all be proud."

And what exactly did Wolford and his crew do? According to his Silver Star citation,

“Staff Sgt. Wolford’s action served to inspire other Soldiers on the battlefield and motivated his section to continue to firefight despite physical injury, vehicle damage and fatigue,” the citation said.

Congressman Duncan Hunter joined us once again for an extended interview on Pundit Review Radio. I think people will be impressed with what they hear.

On the immigration bill, it’s not dead yet, according to Hunter. He said the public should keep the calls and emails coming to Capitol Hill. We also asked him about the war in Iraq and beyond, diplomacy with Iran and Syria, trying to break through in a ten man field, the role of faith in politics and even school vouchers and taxes, briefly.

Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us for our discussion with Michael Yon live from Hit, Iraq. Hit is in Anbar province and we spent a lot of time covering the success in Anbar and the so-called “awakening”. Michael talked at length about the importance and benefits of working with tribal leaders,

“They’ve (tribal leaders) completely turned against Al Qaeda. They are simply not safe here in Anbar anymore.”

He also said that The Awakening was for the US military, a change of strategy that is paying dividends,

“The Awakening is also an awakening for us…We should engage the tribal leaders. There is true benefit to be reaching out to the sheiks and other spheres of influence.”

The bottom line from Michael,

“A new day is dawning and it looks like a real chance for some kind of success here in Iraq and I can tell you my spirits are substantially lifted just over the period of the last couple of months…I see 2007 is going to be a serious year for progress.”

Of course, he also warned that we need patience, time and good decision making to succeeded. I doubt we get any of the three from Washington.

Michael has been very negative on Iraq at times, including a grim assessment on our show in January, so it was very encouraging to hear his report.

Michael is a truly independent citizen journalist and he needs our support to stay in Iraq and continue his great work.

We have to thank Matt Burden from Blackfive once again for putting us in touch with Bruce McQuain from QandO. Matt knew that Bruce was the right man to take over the weekly Someone You Should Know segment.

Bruce told us a great story for Memorial Day weekend, featuring Marine Sgt. Robert J. Mitchell Jr.. There is also an appearance by Brad Kasal, who was the second person selected by Blackfive for Someone You Should Know.

"The day was Nov. 13, 2004, and according to the Marine Corps’ official account of the fierce, close quarters battle, Mitchell ignored his own wounds and repeatedly braved enemy fire to administer first aid to and evacuate other Marines wounded in the fight.

Nearly two years after that fateful day, in a solemn ceremony at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Mitchell received the Navy Cross from Lt. Gen. John F. Sattler, commander of the I Marine Expeditionary Force. The Navy Cross is the nation’s second-highest award for battlefield heroism.

“This is a truly special occasion,” said Sattler, addressing the assembled Marines and guests after presenting the award. “Valor comes in a scale, and all the Marines, sailors, and veterans here today know how rare of an occasion this is.”
