Can a genuinely saved believer lose his salvation? Is eternal security truly biblical, or is it simply a theological tradition that Christians have inherited?
Few questions surrounding salvation have generated as much discussion and disagreement as the security of the believer. Some Christians believe that salvation can be lost through persistent sin or falling away, while others believe that those who are genuinely saved are eternally secure in Christ.
But what happens when we set aside our inherited positions and return to Scripture?
In Episode 9 of the Pure Gospel Africa Podcast and the beginning of Season 2, Pastor Innocent Letam Akara takes a careful look at the biblical foundation of the security of salvation. Rather than beginning with a denominational position, this episode invites us to ask a more fundamental question:
Who is ultimately responsible for preserving the salvation of a believer—the believer or God?
Jesus said in John 5:24 that the person who believes “has eternal life,” “will not be condemned,” and “has crossed over from death to life.” What do these words tell us about the nature of salvation?
We will explore what happens to a person when he believes in Christ, including his new identity as a child of God, his reconciliation with God, his possession of eternal life, and his new position in Christ.
We will also examine some profound promises concerning God's preserving work:
Jesus gives His sheep eternal life and says they will never perish (John 10:27–28).
No one can snatch Christ's sheep from His hand, and no one can snatch them from the Father's hand (John 10:28–29).
Believers are described as God's own possession and are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13–14).
Nothing in all creation can separate believers from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:35–39).
God begins His work in believers and promises to carry it to completion (Philippians 1:6).
But this episode does not pretend that the discussion ends there.
If salvation is eternally secure, what do we do with the biblical passages that appear to warn Christians about falling away? What about serious sin? What about passages that seem to suggest that a believer can lose salvation?
Those questions are not ignored.
In fact, they are where the next part of this journey begins.
This episode lays the foundation and invites every Christian—whether you strongly believe in eternal security, strongly reject it, or are simply unsure—to take a second look at what Scripture actually says.
Perhaps the most important question is not, “How tightly can I hold on to my salvation?”
But rather:
“How securely is God holding me?”
Listen to Episode 9 and examine the Scriptures for yourself.
