Tonight we continue a supplemental study on the Sixth Petition of the Lord's Prayer with the Puritan John Whitlock's sermons through Psalm 18-23 in the book, -The Great Duty of Keeping Ourselves from Iniquity,- recently reprinted by Dr. Don Kistler -of our own RPCGA- and his Northampton Press. We now finish studying the sixth chapter, -The Application of the Doctrine,- with self -examination- and self -exhortation- and final 5-10 signs to search and single out special sins in order to sever them in sanctification- 5- a deliberate unwillingness to have it discovered, reproved, and spoken against- 6- it is a master sin that makes all other sins stoop and bow to it and subserve as means to feed and maintain it- 7- all your duties are made subservient to- 8- it proves too hard for all means of mortification- 9- one will not part with it for Christ and all His gracious Gospel appeals- 10- it prevails most frequently before, in, and after conversing with God's ordinances and holy duties. Because we are in the last days that will be dissolved soon in Christ's fiery judgment at His return on the Last Great Day that is nearer and nearer every day, Christians should be living holy, godly lives that expectantly witness to the pending doom non-Christians face unless they repent and help the Day along by sharing the Gospel with everyone everywhere immediately and often. We now study the sixth chapter, "The Application of the Doctrine," with self "examination" and self "exhortation" and the latter's first four of seven signs to search and single out special sins in order to sever them in sanctification: 1) recognize your beloved reigning lust that sets off fast like tinder does fire; 2) observe what most engrosses your thoughts morning through evening; 3) Listen to your best friends: a. without; b. within: 1. your conscience; 2. your adversities; 3. your death; 4. your preparation and participation in prayer and the sacraments; and 4) listen to what you are most frequently upbraided for by your worst enemies.
