For the first time in a year and a half, the Purple Dinosaur Podcast returns. The reason, of course, is the Colorado Rockies' firing of manager Bud Black, the winningest -- and losingest -- skipper in club history.

The 2025 Rockies are currently on pace to lose 135 games in a sport that plays 162 in a season. They have what appears to be one of the worst rosters ever assembled under the auspices of being a "major league" sports team. They can't hit nor pitch. Oh, and they can't field. But as anyone who's writing up a story about Black's firing is quick to point out: they're still getting good attendance.

On this lengthy PDP, we dive into how this franchise got to this point and if there's any reason to believe that firing Black will suggest any sort of meaningful change to profesisonal sports' most bizarre franchise and its many strange modus operandi.

The 2023 Colorado Rockies season is nearly a month old and is shaping up to be quiet literally the worst in franchise history. The Rockies are off to their second-worst start in team history through 26 games and show very few signs of anything improving. This is a different feeling season for a franchise that has always been happy in mediocrity. There isn't a huge wave of prospects on the horizon. There isn't a singular star player worth the price of admission every night. And maybe most concerning for an ownership always bereft of self-awareness or concern is that fans seem to be tuning out. The Rockies' average attendance is down far more than any other team in baseball this season.
