He gives me a brief overview of the social and political challenges countries in Africa face, and tells us Westerners how we should approach talking about politics in a continent as vast and diverse as Africa. Discussion also turns briefly to the worrying outbreaks of Ebola in parts of Western Africa.

In light of recent events, we have invited a group of people from across Durham to join us for a discussion of how women feel in regards to their safety. We’ll reflect on how the culture at university can breed a challenging environment for young women and the steps we can take as a community to work towards a safer and more inclusive environment for all. Joining hosts Jo and Molly will be Mary Foy (MP for City of Durham), Seun Twins (SU President), Dan Takyi (DPOCA President), Freya Bailes (Captain of DUWFC), Dan Aichen (Charity Sec for CCAFC) and Shmaila Ahmad (2nd Year student and head of the activist group BLM Kingston). Yet, for many, much of the hope and vigour of the Arab Spring uprising remains unfulfilled and lost. Ensuing social and economic deprivation continues at some of the worst levels seen in recent history, and ruthless elites seem more ready than ever to violently suppress. Joshua Guillen is joined by Anoush Ehteshami, director of the Institute for Middle Eastern Studies at Durham University and expert on International Relations of the Middle East to learn more.
