When it comes to choosing God’s forgiveness, it’s a case of the familiar “bad news, good news” scenario (and they must always be understood in that order). To properly understand the “good news” of what’s offered to us in Christ, we must first accept the “bad news” about our sin and its consequences. Though sin is a universal condition that lies behind every problem of substance, God has graciously provided the prescription—but it must be chosen.

After a year of imprisonment John the baptizer finds himself confused and lacking the sense of assurance he once held. To his credit, he sends a couple of his disciples to gain confirmation from Jesus as to His messianic role. After providing John's disciples with an answer, Jesus speaks to the remaining crowds, extolling the greatness of the forerunner. He closes this tribute with a call to decide whether they would accept or reject the important role that the baptizer played.

With these verses the book of Acts comes to an end, but in truth it’s only the end of the beginning. In a very real sense Acts is an unfinished book since the story it tells continues to be written even today as God’s people increase in number and more souls are added to the kingdom. When you think of Philippians 2, most people’s minds immediately go to the theologically rich language of 2:5-11. Therefore it’s somewhat surprisingly that this same chapter ends with something as mundane as Paul’s travel plans for two kingdom coworkers. But there’s more here than meets the eye. In reality he’s pointing us toward two men who modeled the very principles he called for in the opening section of the chapter. This pair of men are certainly worthy of our imitation!

If we were to list the sins we consider to be most serious, surely marital infidelity would make most people's list. But while adultery would occupy a prominent place on our list, there's another sin that affects far more people and that may actually be higher on God's list. That sin is self-righteousness. In this encounter with a sinful woman Jesus deals with both.
