Greetings!
A lot of synchronicity occurred in the construction of this particular show. It started with the book pictured below which was rescued from a local thrift store. It consists, as the title indicates, of a collection of program notes for performances of compositions with the tuba as a solo classical instrument. As I started going through it, I found that while there were some interesting pieces documented, the copyright date was 1994. This, in turn, inspired a dive down another internet rabbit hold to find more current tuba based music. In addition as I was digging, I found that May 6th, the day before the broadcast, was International Tuba Day. Whoda thunk?
My resulting research turned up three doctoral dissertations which focused on various aspects of tuba repertoire, a solo tuba discography & a resource for composers concerning the capabilities of tuba, including the use of extended techniques.
⦁ Investigating "experimentalism" : a case study of the tuba and its repertoire - Andrew Brian Larson - DMA diss., Louisiana State University, 2013
With these resources, it's your turn to deep dive into contemporary tuba music.
Enjoy!

Greetings, Friends.
Having received my second COVID booster on Wednesday and having my typical reaction, which is essentially like having COVID come and tap you on the shoulder and say, "Remember me?" (I had it last January. Feh.) I took a steady stream of Tylenol on Thursday so I could wrap up this weeks program and get the files in to WHUS. So not the most "sparkling" vocal presentation, but functional.
Enjoy and stay safe!

Among this week's musical wanderings, Phase 2 presents a sizeable chunk of prog created by Steve Hackett, including Genesis (after Peter Gabriel's departure) and his early solo works, in addition to his influence on the next generation of musicians including Tiger Moth Tales & the Spectral Mornings 2015 project.
Stay Safe & Enjoy!

Greetings, Fair Listeners!
Welcome to this week's installment of Pushing The Envelope. I continue to listen to the many releases that came in when the program was shut down due to the pandemic and other aspects of real life, like moving from Connecticut to Maryland. I've been feeding things from this pile along with brand new and even pre-released music that's been rolling in (like the Pluhm track).
I hope you enjoy breadth of scope I try to present and please feel free to get in touch.
Take care,
Joel

Welcome to the latest installment of Pushing The Envelope. A sizeable chunk of this week's program focuses on the work of Mike Garson, both as composer and pianist/keyboard player whose is particularly noted for his years playing live and in studio with David Bowie.
For further insight into Mr. Garson's work, check out Clifford Slapper's book, "Bowie's Piano Man: The Life of Mike Garson" and for his own insight into his work with Bowie, the fascinating 2017 documentary, "David Bowie: The Last Five Years".

Greetings!
Welcome to the latest installment of Pushing The Envelope. As you will note, I was recovering from a fairly intense chest cold that my 4 year old grandson, he of the large germs, was kind enough to share with me. I therefore opted to have some fun with some online text to speech voices and processing to present the show. Enjoy!!
