Teach me about Crohns and inflammatory bowel disease - A to Z of the NHS - Dr Gill
We have ALL experienced diarrhoea from time to time whether that is the result of bad food or just bad luck, but imagine that this gastrointestinal upset was your day to day life. This can be the case for sufferers of inflammatory bowel disease whether than is Crohns or ulcerative colitis
Perhaps one of the clearest messages about inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohns disease is that it is an invisible disability, sufferers appear completely normal, but may privately deal with a myriad of issues, from as mentioned diarrhoea to urgency, blood loss, abdominal pain, to issues related to malabsorption
In this video on Crohn's we'll look at what inflammatory bowel disease means, look at the difference between Crohn's and it's sibling disease Ulcerative Colitis, as well as the investigations, such as colonoscopies, the classic medications, and the latest biologicals using antibodies to try and overcome these diseases of inflammation #Chrons #DrGill #Medicine
Understanding Vitamin B12 Deficiency is one of those conditions that people are aware of or might have heard of - especially after Downton Abbey did a story on pernicious anaemia. But many people, even those who receive treatment have not often had anyone help them understands Vitamin B12 Deficiency
B12 deficiency is an essential vitamin, meaning that we must consume it in the diet. As such, vitamin B12 deficiency can be due to failure to absorb, or failure to consume and here we take a look at the overall B2 topic

Abdominal Examination Explained - Clinical Skills Deep Dive - Medical School Revision - Dr Gill The Jugular Venous Pressure
It doesn't matter how many times I had the JVP explained to me in medical school lectures, or in medical school revision sessions after class, it always was a major challenge for me to understand.
However, if looked at carefully, and slowly, the JVP waveform, isn't actually impossible to understand, but does quite reasonably have a reputation as one of the more difficult clinical skill revision challenges
In this video we will try to carefully go over graphs of the venous pulsation to allow easy comprehsneion of teh JVP waveform explained

A Guide to Blood Pressure - A-Z of the NHS - Dr Gill
Understanding BP can be quite a challenge for patients, but actually interpreting blood pressure readings is very simple.
When people have children at home, the most important bit of medical kit they need is a thermometer, after that, ALL households should have a blood pressure meter
Blood pressure is the amount of force caused by blood pressing against the walls of your arteries - but there is quite a bit of science behind what the systolic and diastolic pressures and we are going to try and explain that here so you can understand the function of the blood pressure cuff, and how the pressures in the cuff relate to the calculation of the blood pressure
Dr Andy Stein joins us again to discuss blood pressure and discuss why blood pressure is a silent killer, and what can patients do to maximise the care of their own blood pressure in this A to Z guide to the NHS Enjoy!

How Chemistry is Improving Face Masks to Reduce COVID19 Transmission - Dr Gill Let's be in no doubt.
The UK is currently in another lock down to reduce the case numbers of COVID19, everyone has a role to play in that by following the simple Hands, Face and Space approach. Cleaning hands, and keeping a 2 meter distance from each other is pretty simple.
Unfortunately when it comes to face masks, there is a vastly different array of masks available which can make the choice difficult for patients. In the GP surgery, I see a huge range of masks in use.
Now let me be clear, ANY MASK IS BETTER THAN NO MASK.
*** Please protect others and wear a mask ***
We are all familiar with the disposable 24hr mask, but there is a growing number of reusable masks coming to market. Wise Protec has released a new mask using an existing antimicrobial technology many people are used to seeing in sports gear and shoes.
For absolute clarity, after having reviewed the independent testing - which is freely available from the company - I've opted to use their mask, and to help further development have accepted a role as a medical advisory with their company. This video is to discuss the technology in masks generally, and how the technology in their mask may benefit people
. ****** The previous upload of this video was the recipient of a take down request from YouTube, and I believe I have adjusted the video to ensure that there is 100% clarity that I fully support the wearing of face masks, and the current guidance on their use as issued by the CDC in the USA and NICE in the UK ******
We have the great news that several vaccines have shown highly positive effects, and their use will be a massive part of overcoming the pandemic that is COVID19. Between now and then we need to continue to respect and protect each other, by washing our hands, covering our faces and ensuring social distancing as possible. Take Care

Body Mass Index of BMI often confuses people, so today BMI Explained - is the next focus for our A-Z of the NHS series

Whilst BMI is a valid tool for looking at risk, but also in the circumstances where body mass index breaks down - Mr Schwarzenegger we're looking at you! James discusses some of the facts that contribute to appetite, and how approaches to diet and weight loss cannot be a one size fits all (But don't worry, we elected NOT to use the most emaciated picture of James from the Island to illustrate the point!)

Understanding Blood Pressure Numbers - Deep Dive Clinical Skills - Understanding the Medicine - Dr Gill
Understanding BP measurements seems quite a challenge, but actually interpreting blood pressure readings is very simple.
Clinically the checking the blood pressure is probably one of the most common clinical skills after how to take a pulse Blood pressure is the amount of force caused by blood pressing against the walls of your arteries - but there is quite a bit of science behind what the systolic and diastolic pressures and we are going to try and explain that here so you can understand the function of the blood pressure cuff, and how the pressures in the cuff relate to the calculation of the bloods pressure
Here we’re going to have run through about how we read the blood pressure, the Koroatoff sounds that enable use to determine a blood pressure, and how those are generated In this overview of the clinical assessment of blood pressure we will be dealing solely with the theory of this basic clinical skill before release of the clinical examination next week Enjoy!
