Qualifications vs Functions of an ”Elder”

Listen Later

Guest: Dave Moore

Qualifications for Overseers from 1 Timothy 3:2-7
Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

Dave - how do we really measure if a man is “hospitable”?

Functions of an Elder:
Acts 6 - an elder should give himself to prayer and the word of God
1 Peter 5 - and people who prove themselves to be an example (people want to emulate them)

How do you develop (and deepen) your prayer life? “Palpable desperation.” Do you need God to do something or can you manage life on your own? Are you putting yourself in a ministry position where you need God to help you? Dave’s “magic wand” - everyone has to either teach the Word of God or share their faith - then watch their prayer life increase!

Dave - a good diagnostic (test, evaluation) is actually learning to answer questions that other people have - are you equipped, are you doing the work necessary to be able to engage others in a meaningful discussion about the faith?

Dave - all good discipleship is usually undoing some bad discipleship.

Aspiring to the office of an elder is a noble thing! If you’re not looking to mature in your walk, grow in the grace and mercy of God, then what are you doing?!
