We wanted to highlight how we celebrate our latinidad, whether during our heritage month or in general. We also share our traditions on and off campus. In this episode, Las Hermanas are joined by Dr. Diego Luis to discuss his article "Galleon Anxiety: How Afro-Mexican Women Shaped Colonial Spirituality in Acapulco." We share our thoughts on silencing within history and the effects it has had on our perception of enslavement. We all further discuss how Afro-Mexican women, both free and enslaved, manipulated systems for social power from the 1570s - 1630s in Mexico. In this episode, Las Hermanas discuss ventriloquism and spirituality used by enslaved women in Mexico, Haiti, and Cuba. We discuss rituals that were used to connect to spirits that embrace femininity and break gender boundaries.
