Christmas is known as a time to share with family and loved ones. For many people who identity as Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI+), it can be a difficult time. It can be seen as a time for rejection, exclusion, and loneliness. There are many LGBTI+ people in South Africa who may not have a home or a family to spend this joyous time with.
Over the years, more and more queer South Africans have started gathering during the more lonely times of the year. Queermas is just one of those gatherings; started as something small to create a space for LGBTI+ people to celebrate the spirit of the December festive season in a safer space.
