Chapter 42 Summary
As the plane descends into Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Mark wakes from sleep and notices Samir still dozing. When Samir wakes moments later, Mark casually offers to get him a beverage during the layover — a gesture that builds trust. Samir accepts, and after a brief chat, decides to join Mark during the break to stretch his legs.
During the descent, Samir admits he's anxious about flying, having caught news of a recent Learjet crash in Chicago. Mark seizes the opportunity to mention Dr. Lana Harding — a known contact of Samir’s — and pretends not to know her beyond what was on the news. Samir, alarmed, says he knows Lana personally and worries for her well-being. Mark reassures him and deepens the sense of connection.
After the plane lands, they exit the plane and head toward a coffee shop, with Samir stopping to use the restroom. When he’s delayed, Mark worries momentarily, but Samir returns with a story about overcrowded facilities.
While enjoying their beverages, Mark finally steers the conversation to Samir’s work. Samir reveals that he’s heading to San Francisco to trial a cybersecurity job, set up by Thomas Allen, the CEO of Bit of Security (BOS Corporation). This revelation stuns Mark — Allen is one of the people Mark is investigating.
Mark, pretending not to know Allen, probes further and explains that he’s a professional bodyguard. He feigns interest in possibly working for Allen, using the opening to ask if Allen has personal protection — an indirect way to gain access. Samir says he doesn’t believe so, though Allen is wealthy and successful.
Just as the conversation deepens, the boarding announcement sounds. They return to the gate, and Mark tries to calm Samir’s nerves about flying again by joking that he has a personal bodyguard sitting beside him. Samir smiles, visibly more relaxed, showing the effectiveness of Mark’s charm and patience.
