Hey everyone – as I’m writing this, I’m looking out at (grrr) wet snow that is slowly turning to rain. There are things in life that we count on – things like the frequently cited “death and taxes” – to make the world feel a bit more predictable. “The sun will come up tomorrow” isn’t just a line from a musical. It’s an affirmation of hope, of a future. In this part of the world, the changing seasons are in that category. “Spring will come” can get you through a lot of January…and February…and March. But when it has to get you through a lot of April as well, the lack of affirming evidence can begin to precipitate a crisis of faith. “Will spring actually come this time?”, is starting to feel like a plausible question.
So, what do we do when the stories we tell ourselves in the interest of remaining hopeful don’t behave as usual or even seem like they might not helpfully inform our view of the world? Is there a path forward when our stories misbehave? That’s the general terrain we’ll be in during this week’s Talky Bit.
Barring any truly catastrophic weather events (and no, some rain doesn’t count), we are planning to meet in person this week! We’ve all had some practice these past couple of years with holding plans loosely, so with that in mind here are the details as they stand at the moment:
-We’ll meet this Sunday (April 24th) at Justin’s place (1030 Palmerston), starting at 10:45 with some tuneage and Community Time, then the Talky Bit.
-Covid protocols will remain as they have been for the past couple of gatherings – be vaxxed, be well, and plan to wear your mask when we’re mingling and to make a personal choice about whether you’ll keep it on once we are seated.
NOTE: There will be something for the Little’s this week! Thanks Amy – I’m excited about this and I don’t even get to be in on it.
Next week will be online, and we’re moving ahead with plans to meet in a Community Center the week after that. I’ll keep you posted about the details on that one as they are confirmed. And eventually (see above re: crisis of faith regarding spring), we’ll be able to meet outdoors again, at least on occasion. That’s important for several reasons, not the least of which is that we have a bunch of leadership folks that need to get pies in the face, and a bunch of kids that have been laudably patient about waiting for their opportunity to deliver said pies. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, it might mean you are new to the community. Just ask – it’s a happy story involving community needs, creativity and generosity.
Other details: There will be no And Lunch After this week (come and hang out in person, if you are able), but there will be a mid-week zoom hangout. The URL for that is at the bottom of this email.
I’ll see you (actually see some of you!) on Sunday. We’ll livestream the gathering here as well, because we don’t want anyone to be left out, and there will be a podcast of the Talky Bit posted the following week, as usual.
