Welcome back to QustomDot Radio. This is our 5th episode in this short series where we explore the world of quantum dots and their applications by looking at one company in particular - Qustom Dot. On this episode we zoom in on one of the most promising quantum dots applications - infrared sensors. My two guests are experts on the topic, so you’re in good hands. Pawel Malinowski is a Program Manager at iMec and a Researcher with over 10 years experience in development of cutting edge photonics technologies. Stefano Guerrieri  works on developing Image Sensors Technology at OSRAM, and has previously been instrumental in developing new technologies at STMicroelectronics, Micron Technology and imec. And today they will explain to us how quantum dots can be a game changer for infrared sensors.

Together with their team, our 3 founders have made QustomDot what it is today: an advanced materials company, that will not only produce on-chip grade Quantum Dots (QDs) but also assist customers in successfully integrating QDs into their products. And now we will hear from them how it all began, at the University of Ghent.

On today’s episode, we’ll be talking to leading experts in the field of light and microLEDs, to find out more about the lighting market and the role quantum dots play there. We’ll dive into some of the most exciting applications made possible with this technology, with a focus on Augmented Reality and the difference quantum dot technology can make. My guests today are Youri Meuret and Soeren Steudel.

We’ll chat first to Youri Meuret, Professor at KU Leuven. Youri's current research interests at the light & lighting laboratory include the modelling, design and measurement of novel light sources (LED, OLED, lasers...) and illumination/lighting systems. Basically he knows all about light, so we had to have him on this podcast.

My second guest today is Soeren Steudel, Co-founder & CTO at MICLEDI microdisplays. Soeren is an Experienced Technology Development Manager, with many years spent transferring R&D processes from pilot line to a volume manufacturing fab. He’s the right person to tell us all about microLEDs, how and where they can best be used and what challenges need to be overcome in the process.

What exactly are Quantum Dots (QDs)? And what can we do with them?

Quantum dots are semiconductor particles a few nanometres in size, having optical and electronic properties that differ from larger particles due to quantum mechanics. They are a central topic in nanotechnology and the central topic of our conversation in this episode, with two experts in the field: Dr. Jonathan (S) Steckel - Director of Advanced Technology Intelligence in Imaging at STMicroelectronics and Prof. Dr. Zeger Hens of Gent University (leading the Physics and Chemistry of Nanostructures Group).
