This is the episode Dr. Lee wanted to record so badly...but also DIDN'T want to.
She's joined by Marian King, a phenomenal human being that has lived life and situations that made her realize that the "Black experience is not always the Black experience". The reality is that a lot of important conversations are not had because of the fear around "saying the wrong thing".
So, it's a messy episode. But it's a necessary one.
What sparked the conversation? A comment on a Zoom call.
"In my Black experience, I don't know when it happened, but by 3 years old we knew that when the adults were talking, we were quiet."
Cue a conversation around culture, race, trauma, parenting, and so much more. That was the inspiration behind this week's episode.
The challenge is that it's gotten to the point that when we need to have these important conversations, we are so careful with our words we are almost afraid to speak. So we lose the potential for a collective sharing of experiences where we feel safe enough to say and receive messages we feel compelled to share, the ability to compare those messages to our own understandings, process, and then have safe and effective dialogue.
You'll want to really listen carefully to this one.
NOTE: Dr. Lee and her guest are not speaking for everyone, or sharing opinions other than their own. Listen to this episode with that lens. If things come up for you as you listen, good. It's a messy episode...
