    اِلتفاتِ  گُلِ  تر  یاد  آیا

    تیری  بیگانہ  نگاہی  سرِ  شام

    یہ  ستم  تا  بہ  سحر  یاد  آیا

    ہم  زمانے  کے  ستم  بھول  گئے

    جب  ترا  لُطفِ  نظر  یاد  آیا

    تو  بھی  مسحُور  تھا  اُس  شب  سرِ  بزم

    پھر  ہوا  دردِ  تمنّا  بیدار

    پھر  دلِ  خاک  بہ  سر  یاد  آیا

    ہم  جسے  بھول  گئے  تھے  جالبؔ

    پھر  وہی  راہگزر  یاد  آیا

    राहगुज़र याद आया-हबीब जालिब

    लोक-गीतौं का नगर याद आया

    आज परदेस में घर याद आया

    जब चले आए चमन-ज़ार से हम

    इल्तेफ़ात-ए गुल-ए तर याद आया

    तेरी बेगाना-निगाही सर-ए शाम

    ये सितम ता ब सहर याद आया

    हम ज़माने के सितम भूल गये

    जब तेरा लुत्फ़-ए नज़र याद आया

    तू भी महसूर था उस शब सर-ए बज़्म

    अपने शेरौं का असर याद आया

    फिर हुआ दर्द-ए तमन्ना बेदार

    फिर दिल-ए ख़ाक ब-सर याद आया

    हम जिसे भूल गये थे जालिब

    फिर वही राहगुज़र याद आया

Wrote and spoke/recited fearlessly against dictatorship, inequality and injustice in simple straightforward language. This Ghazal, in the zamin of Ghalib’s, ‘diida-e tar yaad aaya’ is linked to ‘Ghalib naqsh-e qadam’.

    habib jaalib was born in a small village in hoshiarpur district. In his late teens, when the family migrated to the pakistan side of the border, it is possible that he remembers it and means his birthplace as home and that it is known for its folk-songs. In this context he considers lahore ‘foreign’ or ‘away from home’ and remembers the folk-songs of his birthplace.

    When we left that expansive garden, memories of fresh flowers return. Fresh flowers could here literally mean that, or loving associations of his homeland.
