In the sixth aliyah (section) of Parshas Beshalach, the gift of the man is intertwined with the gift of Shabbos. The manwas not simply bread from the heavens, sustaining their physical bodies; rather, it was a heavenly sustenance that nourished their souls. We double our work on Friday so that we will have what to eat on Shabbos; similarly, Hashem created Adam on Friday, although he is really a Shabbos creation. The connection between the manand Shabbos demonstrates that we can be sustained by the presence of Hashem, and should not only wish to be sustained through physical means. - Library: Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion - RabbiHauer.org
