Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!
On this episode of Star Wars Beyond the Films, Nathan and Mark are joined by special guest host Berent, of Star Wars Action News and Republic Forces Radio Network fame.
They discuss racial equality in the Star Wars universe.
Are the two, main, African American characters in the Star Wars movies (Lando and Mace) there just to ‘fill the quota’?
Is it better to have skin color and aliens visibly represent racial equality? Or is it better to accurately portray cultural differences and aspects?
And, is the portrayal of racial stereotypes within an alien culture racist in and of itself?
It seems like the human race in Star Wars tends to be mostly portrayed as light-skinned… But the alien races in Star Wars tend to have a number of cultural differences and ethnicitys. Even droids in Star Wars are more diverse than the Jedi!
And what class of citizen do droids and clones fall into? Especially with The Clone Wars series going on, it’s something that’s certainly being explored in universe.
What do you think about race, culture and equality in Star Wars? Let us know in the comments below!
