1 Peter 4:7-11
[7] The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. [8] Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. [9] Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. [10] Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. [11] If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
The STORY of GOD and the BELIEVER’S HOPE - where are we in the unfolding drama of Scripture? How then shall we live? A healthy vision of the end shapes and sustains our CURRENT priorities, practices, passions, and pursuits!
PRAYER - connects and reorients us to what Jesus is saying, thinking, feeling, and wanting to do…encounters God’s love…engages with God in communion and conversation…enlists God’s help through intercession and petition…empowered by the Spirit to follow Jesus in obedience and faith.-
DEEP LOVE - cross shaped, self-emptying, sacrificial, covenantal and committed to the long game…forgiveness, reconciliation, repentance…
HOSPITALITY - set the table, open hearts and open hands, joyful spirit free from grumbling…(wishing for a different community instead of embracing those within arms distance)…the no comparison, competition, or complaining zone.
USING GOD’S GIFTS for his glory and the good of others - each person at the table is welcomed, wanted, and valuable. Discovering God’s love and unique design for each one is central to table fellowship…as gifts are accepted and activated we begin to experience more of the multi-faceted grace of God in our midst. These are not “our gifts” as so much of the gift assessments might mistakenly lead us to believe. We’re STEWARDS not OWNERS of the grace of God on our lives…
PROCLAIMING GOD’S WORDS - practically and prophetically…What has he said, what has he done…what is he saying and what is he doing…this is the GREAT balance of proclamation and prophecy. Christ is in our midst, his word establishes and equips us for every good work. He speaks through his people so lean in and listen.
SERVING with GOD’S STRENGTH - we are a Spirit sourced community. God is constantly filling, forming and flowing through us for his glory and the good of those around us. We mustn’t rely on the arm of flesh, or our own grit, determination and willpower…these falter and fail but the Father will give the Spirit without measure especially to those who’s hearts are set on obeying and imitating Christ in word, thought, and deed.
THE TABLE TILTS TOWARDS JESUS!!! - so that in all things God may be praised THROUGH Jesus Christ…Jesus is the aim of our affection the center of our attention and the only worthy recipient of our wholehearted allegiance. He’s in our hearts, on our lips and constantly on our minds…we are his HANDS and his FEET.
