When you put the dreams of others before your own – One last tests Joseph had to face was to help others with their dreams while he was still waiting on the fulfillment of his. We will face the same test. We must embrace the fact that we are never more like Jesus when we do this….as it shows full trust in the plans that God has for our lives while we take care of the people in our paths who need help. Like Joseph, we never know how our actions and help today will have an impact on our dreams tomorrow.

Working the dream but not at the level you dreamed of – Joseph had a dream that he would one day have rulers bow down before him. That he would be in charge of nations and have great influence. Instead, he found himself asked to be in charge of the prisoners while he was in prison himself. It could have been easy for him to become bitter working in his giftings while not at the level he knew he was destined for. We face the same tests along the way toward our dreams with God looking to see if we will be faithful, even in the small things. Only then can he trust us with greater.

The biggest temptation of dreams - Joseph was living with Potiphar and was finally becoming prosperous. Potiphar’s wife offered Joseph a chance to live a portion of his dream through an easy choice compared to the uncertainty of having all the dream fulfilled through a difficult choice. Today, dreamers face the same temptation. When faced with this choice, we can learn a lot from the life of Joseph and set in our hearts to “run.”

When the lights go out – There comes a time in any dream where the unexpected blow happens, designed to knock us out in one instant. This happened to Joseph when his brothers betrayed him and threw him in a well to die. When these events happen in our lives, like Joseph, we must be willing to look to the good no matter how small it may come and how unusual the relief comes. God will work all things for His glory, for our good, and will fulfill our dream if we will stay faithful even when the lights go out.

The obstacles of dreams – In working toward our dreams and waiting on their fulfillment, there are two common obstacles that will arise: our own immaturities and the harmful choices of others. Like Joseph, these obstacles exist to cause us to doubt our identity and our ability to hold on to the dream till the end. It’s in these times where we must hold on to the character and promise of the person who gave us the dream in the first place. God’s plans for our lives will come to fruition and fulfillment based on His word and nothing else.

When people hate your dream. – Our God given dreams can create insecurities in people, as it highlights their own circumstances and the hidden state of their heart. We cannot afford to be discouraged when other people don’t understand or celebrate what is in our heart. Looking at the life of Joseph and his brothers, we see how we keep our dream alive by looking at the source of the dream itself and not through our social circumstances.

Who is worthy of a dream? It can become easy to assume that the only people worthy of a dream come from ideal environments and with ideal circumstances. Looking at the history and background of Joseph, we find that he was the unlikeliest one to be given a dream and find hope knowing that God chooses us not based on our worth, but based on His goodness.
