Have you ever walked into a supermarket, hospital, or appointment and felt your whole body shift into a different gear? Scanning the environment, tracking every sound, monitoring every variable, and trying to stay three steps ahead of something that hasn’t happened yet?
Or have you been so deeply exhausted that an alarm, machine, or important signal didn’t wake you — and the guilt afterwards felt impossible to put down?
In this solo episode of Nervous System Reset for Caregivers, Michelle explores hypervigilance and hypovigilance: two nervous system states that many caregivers move between without realising.
Hypervigilance can look like constant scanning, bracing, anticipating, and monitoring. Hypovigilance can look like shutdown, flatness, reduced responsiveness, or missing something you would normally notice. Neither is a character flaw. Both can be signs of a nervous system that has been working beyond sustainable capacity.
In this episode, we explore:
- What hypervigilance means in long-term caregiving
- Why caregivers may scan for sensory triggers, medical changes, and social judgement
- How public criticism and difficult experiences can increase caregiver hypervigilance
- What hypovigilance can look like after prolonged stress and sleep disruption
- Why caregivers may move between over-alert and completely depleted
- When hypervigilance protects you — and when it starts costing more than it gives
- How to name your nervous system state without shame
- A simple anchor scan for hypervigilance
- One stabiliser for moments when your system has gone offline
Gentle note
This episode includes caregiver burnout, chronic stress, sensory overload, hypervigilance, hypovigilance, and the emotional impact of missing important signals. Please listen in a way that feels supportive for you. You’re welcome to pause and come back at any time.
Try this small step
Ask yourself gently: “Which state am I in right now?”
Am I hypervigilant — scanning, braced, and tracking everything? Or hypovigilant — flat, offline, and running on very little?
No judgement. Naming the state is the first step towards giving your body the support it needs.

Caregiver to caregiver, your body is not broken. It has adapted to a life with real responsibility, real uncertainty, and real stakes.
