Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says he is NOT leaving the union federation. Vavi admitted that he refused to sign a letter expelling NUMSA from the union federation. Vavi says in a letter he wrote last week, he did mention that the decision taken by Cosatu central executive committee to expel Numsa from the trade union federation has "momentous implications". The letter was sent on Tuesday and addressed to the Cosatu president, affiliate general secretaries and provincial secretaries. About 300 people including families, say that they will continue to sleep out in the open, and will not move from the land they occupied illegally, until the City of Tshwane addresses their housing needs. Tshwane Metro Police and security guards dismantled shacks illegally built on a vacant plot in Nellmapius, on wednesday. The community leader says that they waited for a representative from the city, who was scheduled to address them, but were later told that the person will not be coming because of a gala dinner he is scheduled to attend. The remains of South Africans who died when a church building collapsed in Nigeria will be repatriated at the weekend. Minister in the presidency Jeff Radebe is in Nigeria to fast-track the return of the bodies, two months after the guest house at the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed. The church headed by preacher TB Joshua, collapsed on September 12, killing 116 people. These included 81 South Africans, as well as three Zimbabweans and one Democratic Republic of Congo national using South African travel papers.

COSATU says it remains committed to its decision taken at the weekend to expel its largest affiliate, NUMSA, from the labour federation. Briefing the media in Johannesburg yesterday COSATU's leadership said while booting out NUMSA was a painful decision and one that was not taken lightly, it was now important to work towards forging unity within affiliates and COSATU as a whole. It now says that NUMSA can appeal its expulsion at COSATU's National Congress in September next year and has hit out at its critics

Striking post office workers have been urged by parliament's portfolio committee on telecommunications and postal services, to return to work. This follows the voluntary resignation of the South African Post Office board. The strike by workers has now entered it's fourth month. The workers are demanding an eight percent pay rise, and the conversion of casual workers to permanent staff. The strike is expected to result in a shortfall of millions of rand for the already cash-strapped post office. Joining us now to discuss the matter further is Mamoloko Kubayi, chair of Parliament's portfolio committee on telecommunications and postal services.

Union Federation COSATU is now facing a new challenge, with seven affiliates suspending their participation in the Federation with immediate effect, yesterday. This, after the Central Executive Committee decided to expel its largest affiliate NUMSA, on Friday last week. The ANC described that expulsion as disappointing and tragic, and a setback for COSATU, the tripartite alliance and other progressive forces in South Africa.
