Outdoor Gear - The 10 Essentials
1 - Navigation
There are multiple options for navigation, starting with a GPS or a back-country navigation app for your phone. However since these items have potential to fail, it is always good to carry a map and compass as backup.
2 - Sun Protection
Exposure is a huge risk for injuries, especially at the high elevations we are used to in Colorado. Bring a hat, eye protection, and sunscreen.
3 - Illumination
If you’re planning on being somewhere late, you need to plan on having a light. Headlamps are a good choice because they allow you to light the way without sacrificing the use of your hands. They also make it easier for you and your friends to find each other, as well as for search and rescue to find you in the dark. (don’t forget extra batteries!)
4 - Insulation
Even in the summer, this is a good idea. You never know how cold it might get, and if you somehow get wet, you will need this insulation to keep yourself from getting hypothermia.
5 - First Aid
Along with what you’d expect in a basic first aid kit, if you have allergies or other medical conditions that require medication, make sure to bring enough for at least an overnight stay, even if you are not planning on one.
6 - A Way To Start A Fire
This does not just mean a lighter, you need something that will still be able to get the fire started even if it is wet. Examples include waterproof matches, a blast match, a magnesium stick, etc. A fire can also double as a signaling aid, and can be a good psychological boost if you end up stranded by yourself.
7 - A Multitool or Knife
Whether you need to fix your broken bike, defend yourself, or whittle a stick for entertainment, a multitool or knife is necessary.
8 - Extra Food
Bring something that can give you energy if you end up stuck in the wilderness.
9 - Extra Water
Because you’re gonna get THIRSTY.
10 - A Backup Shelter
You can get emergency shelters that are very compact now. Having one can make a world of difference if you have to hunker down for the night.
